I think 5-1 is keeping it simple, plus enables your setter to hit/dink half of the time. If I was to coach any team, I wouldn't bother teaching anything but 5-1. You get your best setter that way all of the time. If that is all you teach than it becomes simple, because that is the only option and is less confusting than "who is setting now".
Our team was lucky, we had a lefty setter who could power dink and power spike as well. When he was vacant, I set and I am lefthanded and it is a lot of fun to get some pass tight to the net and your thinking "great, that's impossible to set" so you just crank on it. Sometimes I would hope to get tight passes. Since I don't set much, once in a while I would hit one and be coming from the back row. Oops! Still fun doing 5-1 with lefties. |
