I'm going to say it really isn't raw strength at all. You're hitting a 260-280g (< 10 oz) ball so it doesn't take much to accelerate it. But the ball can't move any faster than your hand does so it really has to do with form and speed. Engaging your abs at the right time and snapping your wrist all give the ball that extra pop that is going to change it from an OK hit to a really "hard" hit.

Remember the clinic you went to EG? I don't think anyone would say Tom looked like he had raw strength, but that skinny guy could put a hurting on the ball.

So in short, Dex, you really need to work on your approach, form, and timing. Weights are going to help you but that is secondary to proper technique.
