I think of baseball where all players (except AL pitchers) need to know how to hit, bunt, run the bases, catch, and throw. But outfielders don't really need to know how to catch a player in a run down, infielders don't have to practice judging fly balls, and catchers don't need to know how to turn a double play on a ball hit to the right side of the infield.

Well, I see your baseball reference, but look at the pitchers who get traded from AL to NL (Zito). They get screwed into things they don't know and look atrocious trying to do something they can't proficiently do.
It's the same thing with hitters, passers, setters and just on a personal level. If I want to improve myself as a volleyball player/coach, I want to know every detail about the game.
