All of this is well and good, but this is volleyball. You MUST know how to do all things if you want a shot at being competitive. What is unique about the game is the rotation its not baseball where you are doing the same thing at the same place every play. Or football where all you need to know is run and catch.
Every single player must know how to pass. The setter still plays defense, they will be forced to pass during every game. The middles who are libero'ed out must pass when they are in the front row, or during the rotation in which they are serving. Obviously the other players pass all the time.
Also all players must be able to set. The setter takes the first ball someone must be able to put up a hittable set. Also on a shanked pass there needs to be a hittable set. Free balls are not an option at higher levels.
Every player must be able to serve, there is rumor going on about introducing the libero serving to the men's game as well.
Every player should learn to hit. The setter should be an option to hit as well if they are not the one setting. Also liberos should be able to hit a hard down ball.
Every player should also be able to hit back row, If there is a bad pass, back row must be an option.
