As a coach, an official and a player I have played and watched the game from several different angles. The very best habit a player can have is to have their serve down in such a way that even when the game is on the line: game, match point, they can trust their serve will go over the net and into the big box on the other side of the net.
Too many games go down the tubes simply because the players are unable to get their serves in.
The players need to practice their serves while under stress of some kind so that in a tight situation they won't get unnerved. Coaches: have serving drills that have ramifications for when the serves don't go in. Give them the drive to get that serve in. If you have a good server, have them work on serving tough to location. |
