What level are you coaching? Frosh, JV, Var? I didn't start teaching the signals until JV. Frosh run the (4.2.5), and JV will start slowly with the (4.1.Slide.5.) get a little trickier. but, your varsity should easily pick it up. also, it depends on what the team feel comfortable with.
Our college team had set play sets..
Black: 4,1,5
Green: X, B1
Blue: 3, 1, Red
Jam: 4, B1, Front 1
Red: Shoot, front slide, Red
Shocker: 3, 1, Pipe (10'), B1
quick things the setter can yell on a free ball...or if we're in SR, he can mention what we all agreed that the symobls would be. Don't just teach them during practice the signals, give them a hand out and sit down with your setter and set what each signal is and make sure she knows it by heart.
