Anyone else have foot pain? - 08-23-2006, 12:28 AM

Do any of you get moderate to severe foot pain after playing sand? Mine sets in about an hour after playing and if I played at night, the next morning when my feet hit the floor it's excruciating.

I had thought it may be heel spurs but I don't know enough about it. I'd see a doctor but my wife doesn't care about me enough to look up the name of our podiatrist.

look up plantar fasciitis, its a surprisingly common heal ailment that can lead to heel spurs. Its the inflammation of (as the "itis" obviously explains) the fiborous tissue that connects the heel bone to the base of the toes. People with flat feet and high arches are prone to getting it almost chronically when overworked.

To prevent: just like anything else....STRETCH!
To treat: try freezing a paper cup filled with water, peel away the paper until about a half inch of ice is exposed and massage your foot with the ice, constantly moving for 5-10 minutes. This is the ice-cupping technique, it works wonders.

Ahh athletic training classes, who knew they could pay off?

What a coincidence! I think I might have plantar fasciitis because I've been having pain in my foot recently. When I looked up "common foot injuries" today, plantar fasciitis perfectly described what I'm feeling in my foot.

Thanks for the treatment advice! I think my shoes have stopped supporting my feet...and I also have flat feet so that doesn't help.

Anyways, thanks for the help.

I suffered with this for about a month. Best treatment is to slow down your activity for a while. Stretching the whole foot all the way forward and back each morning while laying flat on your back with legs full extended will help the first steps on to the floor in the morning.
If you have to play, use 3 pieces of sports tape and apply them from ball of foot just behind toes to the backbottom of the heel in sort of a mild "w" shape, overlapping the 3 pieces on the heel. Tape will keep the foot from over stretching those tendons and muscles while you play. Don't keep tape on for more than 3 days. It leaves residue that's hard to get off and your foot really stinks.
Online treatments also recommmend not going barefoot on hard surfaces while you are suffering this. Wear shoes with decent support.

What a relief!!! I thought all my aches were from getting old.

There are 10 kinds of people in this world. Those who understand binary and those who don't.

I bought some arch supports just for this season because I'm deathly afraid of getting injured... And, my season is just about to start, so I basically can't not play. I'm a captain and a starter, so it's impossible for me to decrease my playing time. Yuck.

But I recently pulled my hammy so maybe my coaches will take that into consideration. Hehe.
