Anyone have knee problems? - 09-16-2006, 07:30 AM

I'm curious, it seems after playing several hours my knees will ache. What do you guys do for knee aches? Ice? Should I get one of those neoprene knee braces?

My knees don't hurt normally, if they do I just take ibuprofen (have a nice 800mg perm prescription) and do RICE. RICE solves almost anything...

Rest
Ice
Compress
Elevate

The knee is a pretty complicated joint to just kind of generalize how to stop them from hurting. There are a ton of factors that could be contributing to the pain. But usually the bottom line is the link with inflammation. And so Strazz's advice is good. Ice and ibuprofen are good ways to relieve some of the pain associated with the inflammation.

If the pain is pretty much restricted to aches after a long duration of play then you might want to think about a couple of other things. Depending on your age you might have some cartilage loss and this could be adding to the problem. A doctor might have ideas about how to help this.

Or weight sometimes has a major impact on knee pain. Even a few pounds can make a big difference on how your knees feel after playing. Now don't go become anorexic or anything but if you have put on an eaxtra pound your body might be noticing. Mine certainly does. Just food for thought. (FYI, I really have no medical background and this is just the opinion of someone who has spent years around athletes.)

My knees hurt often after playing. I have a knee compression thing that I wear when I am playing. It is breathable and works well. I also take 400mg of ibuprofen before playing. Sometimes 600mg. Knee bands and compresion things work for something like 60% of people with knee pain. A doctor should look at it and they will be able to give you (hopefully) the most educated advice. I have tendonitis in both of my knees, it is also refered to as jumpers knee. The knee band doesnt work for me, but ibuprofen and the compression sleeve thing does. Where on your knee does it hurt? Does it only hurt when you flex it one way?

I wear full neoprane braces on both knees these days. I certainly wish that I'd done more preventative maintenance when I was younger. Weight work (squats in particular) would have helped overall strength in the knee. (In fact, I wish I'd done more preventative maintenance on ALL my body parts when I was younger. Warm up fully & STRETCH AFTER YOU PLAY kids! You'll be thankful you did when you reach your 30's.)

If I don't wear the braces while playing indoor, I can barely walk for the next coupla days. With them, I have no pain at all either during play or afterwards.

I've tried the small strap thing that was pictured above but it's not effective for me. I need the full compression.

I don't use a band. I can't find a picture. It looks like a knee pad without the pad. Here is a link. This one is made of neoprene. The one I use is a polyester/cotton mix. They sell it at Olympia, Champs, almost every sports store. It is made by McDavid. Leval one support knee sleeve. Something like that anyways.

Hope that helps.

I used the PRO-TEC PATELLAR TENDON STRAP and it actually made my other knee to hurt more. The added weight caused me to favor my other leg. Wearing them in pairs would just look silly.
