The way I've always been taught and taught others is, have your thumbs parallel to each other, with about 4" - 5" in between. This with strong hands gives you a good chance to take the brunt of the ball with the heels of your palm. This means if you direct it - it will go down, faster. If your playing good defenses, then this is clearly better to do...
As for getting tooled - this gives them something "hard" to hit. I know when I go for tools I go for finger tips - or to jam them. If someone is shoting me fingers, I hit them, if they show me palms it's generally harder. Plus you can redirect a tool if thats what they are going for.
Dex:
To stop from getting tool you change the way your hands are blocking - it may seem weird, but if someone is tooling you EVERYTIME and you can read it. Either drop your hands - or turn your hands so that they are hitting into them, and you redirect the ball into the court.
Wow I so got tooled on my block Friday nite because my hands weren't like dude w/jersey #4....imagine that!!! And I had just read this thread! Oh well, repetition, repetition, repetition = eventual retention
Great thread. Thanks for the pictures coachmanzi. Visual aids are much better than trying to use words to explain something. At least that is the case for me.

yea, me too...You can see the difference between the MB and Opp. The forearms are a huge factor..Notice how the Opp has gotten a fair amount of penetration onto the net and able to pike through his block...But, the MB has a gap between him and the net...
Short player, never a blocker...But I go thumbs 11, seal tight on net, and hands to ball. It's the hitter's mistake to be blocked by me...LOL's...while they should be hitting over me.
