Courtesy Calls: Calling a ball out - 08-01-2006, 10:33 AM

I'm playing on a outdoor six's team and I'm wondering if there are any standard rules for team-mates calling the ball in or out? Who is really responsible for the call and really at what times?

I guess it depends on the team as a whole.

Whenever/where ever I play I am constantly calling the ball in or out if I can, how many blockers are up, when they should hit.

Not all the teams I play on recipricate. I find that kind of annoying or rude at sometimes. As - what shots open guys? Someone help me out?

I just take it as, if your setting the bar, and not ones meeting your expectations - they must not want to play as hard as you...

Just follow the golden rule - do unto others as you would like done unto yourself. Call everything - it's contagious usually.

I've found that on all the best teams I've been able to observe everybody is communicating something. Alot of the coaches I've talked to as well try to instill it in everyplayer to call every ball in/ out/ mine/ (name of player who should be playing), calling blocks or defenses etc.

If someone says, hey you threw me off by calling that... then they need to work on their game.

Quick note... Not sure if you ment calling out a person when you think it's their ball...

It's good to say someones name your passing too. Not really needed - helps in quads/triples.

DON'T call out "yours", "you go" or someones name on a receive coming over the net. If no one calls "mine" - that means no ones taking it. It takes too long to process "yours" - "oh crap, he wants me to take it?!" - opposed to "no ones calling mine" - "mine!".

It really depends on the venue...in the summer I play mostly 2's and some 3's. You'd think I was calling a car race w/how much I jabber

If my partner's playing it and it's up near their head I say "play it!" (to indicate to them that it's in and they should play/pass the ball.) If it's one or two over and I want them to get it I yell "Over Over Over." Or if I'm gonna get it I yell "Over Mine Mine Mine" (the Over part then Mine is to indicate for them to get ready quick as I may pass them high and tight so they should be ready to hit it on 2 (or set back to me at their discretion.) If the ball is out I yell "Out Out Out!"

If it's serve receive and it's between us and if I can reach it I yell "Mine Mine Mine" or "I go." If on serve receive I think it's theirs I yell their name or "You You You!" or "Yes Yes Yes" to indicate to them that it's in and I want them to play it. However, I would never yell "You" in 6's, too much chance for confusion. In that situation I would yell the person's name.

Oh yeah, also in 2's on a shanked pass and I'm running outta the court with my back to my partner I want them yelling "I'm here I'm here!" so I can backset to just in front of where their voice is coming from because I cannot see them in that situation.

If their pass to me is in the back court and my set to them is off the net I yell "You're off! Roll it! Roll it!" (so they don't smash it into the net or out because it's hard to hit a ball coming from behind you) If there's a blocker up I may yell "Cross!" or "Deep line!" depending where the block is set. If my pass is too tight I yell "Tight Punch It Punch it!" or "Tight! Touch it! Touch it!" Or if there's a block up anticipating the 2nd hit over I yell "Punch Punch One up!" or "Punch Punch Go Deep!" meaning hit up on the ball and not into the block or else cut it hard.

I dig it

Jeez, a thread about talking....

All my past teams probably hated me for all the talking I do. Sometime I probably dont even make sense.

As for letting other people know, its definately not good to say yours, or you go. I have gotten into the habit of yelling "its good" or "come on".

I actually say "its good" on nearly every ball, I feel it jump-starts the people on the court. After that, someone in a better position to call it, or they person playing the ball can make the decision.

Come on is usually when Im trying to encourage someone to dig up a tip or track down my shank.

Just develop something that comes out quickly and is easy to understand.

You mean you are supposed to make sense when you are talking on the court? I have no idea what I say sometimes but I figure if it gets people moving it'll help. I have major issues calling balls out though. For some reason the word 'Out' is not in my vocabulary when I am on the court. So, I usually end up saying. 'Don't hit the ball' or 'Don't go for it.' I like to make life difficult I guess.
