Following through... - 07-17-2006, 08:11 PM

Here is a repost of two images I took at the Bay State Games (Summer 2006) on sunday, the 16th.

Just goes to show, when a coach say follow through on your hit and explode with your muscles.... This is what can happen when you listen and try your hardest..

By the way it was a kill and he is an AMAZING player - some what short, but amazing vert.

Here is a mid flight shot and his follow through.

Actually all that energy that he's using should have been transfered to the ball. In a world of perfect physics you'd want to be perfectly straight when you've contacted the ball. The pike at the end is overkill, and lost energy. Now I know that human physiology dictates that some follow through is necessary, that looks a little silly.

What you are referring to is a total transfer of energy and while it works well with pool balls, it does not work well when you have objects of disparate mass. In the case of the hitter and the volleyball, the followthrough is essential as there is no way that the hitter is going to transfer all his energy into the volleyball. Remember:

Ke = 0.5 *m * v²

Assuming a total transfer of energy, a 1lb volleyball (that was the estimated perball shipping weight in my latest order), a 144lb volleyball player, we could get something like this:

Ke = 0.5 * 144 lb * (v1)² = 0.5 * 1lb * (v2)²

or

v1 = 12 * v2

That means that if there was somehow some magic way of transferring all your energy, the volleyball would explode at 12 times the velocity of the player.

Ok, this is all garbage because it is not just the player's body, but also his arm speed, wrist snap, etc.,... BUT follow through is important and total transfer of energy is not possible when the object hitting weighs more/has more mass than the object being hit.

How is his recovery after that? Is he back in the next play if there is a quick return?

Yes he is. I played against him at that tournament and he hit two balls right in a row. (I dug the first one, and was a forearm away from the second one.)

For all the other comments: Physics Sucks.
