Home: Volleyball and a computer chair or home chair toss the ball above your head getting the feel for the over head motion.

Gym: 3 pound medicine ball. Stand with feet apart and lightly toss the ball over your head.

Play local gyms for rec play. It helps to keep you nimble.

Suggestion - 12-09-2007, 07:40 PM

Set a basketball against the wall. It's heavier than a volleyball and will help develop and strengthen your wrists and your fingers as well as get a better "feel" for the ball. A few low ones just overhead to get warmed up, then try pushing it up higher on the wall. When you do the high ones, try to keep pushing it to the same spot on the wall. When your hands contact the ball, position yourself and visualize as if you almost want the basketball to hit you in the forehead each time. Good setters have great footwork and this will help you with this.

I dig it

plethora of things - 12-10-2007, 09:35 AM

First, start by going through the archives on vbli. I believe that we had a discussion on setting in the not too distant past. I'm sure that there are some other suggestions or at least to links on good articles and I think some critiques on a couple of questionable ones.

Second, to quote Pat Powers (because that's what I do) "You're either born a setter or you're not." That being said I still think that with training everyone can do an ok job at it. Listen to what KVB has to say, she's someone who trains all aspects of the game to become better and is not someone I would call a natural setter but has become great at it.

Third, just keep doing it. Most of the people reading your post are probably thinking only since Feb and they're concerned they can't set? Most people play volleyball for years and can't get the setting thing down so don't become frustrated yet. Find a setter in a league or open play with some coaching experience and ask them for a few tips.

As a NON-SETTER who probably should have been a setter here's my say. Things to think about... Feet- move to where you want to go and stop. Hands- get them up early, get them up early, get them up early AND keep them there until you set.

Only other drill I can think of that I have heard a lot of reference to is to lie on your back on the ground and practice setting the ball from your forehead. I don't know how it helps. hahaha. Good Luck!

Setting Technique - 12-19-2007, 12:40 PM

While you practice focus on getting all 10 fingers to contact the ball everytime. This gives you more control.

Also there is a difference between putting up a good looking set and putting up a hittable set. Outside of getting called for a set your highest concern is getting the ball to your hitter. The prettiest looking set in the world isn't useful at all if its 8ft off the net to your OH.

A good set is anything that doesn't get called by the ref and gets right into your hitters wheelhouse.

I have a slew of articles on setting somewhere, but not all of the information is good. You kinda have to know what to pick an choose from each. I'll try to find them.

Some additional info from you would be helpful.

What are your goals? Are you just trying to develop technique so you can avoid getting called for your hands? Are you trying to become a setter? Is this exclusively for indoor/outdoor/both?

I'm a libero, I don't set...

so, here is a link to help you.

10 fingers on the ball is ridiculous...along with setting a basketball.

Manzi, that link kinda blows. I couldn't even figure out what the heck they were trying to say. A little too little information contained there in. And aren't libero's supposed to have some back-up setting skills?

What's your take on using 'the setter' ball to practice with? (for those who don't know, 'the setter' is an official sized but over weighted volleyball)

Aside from the 10 fingers, maybe you have small hands and smell like Cabbage.
