Question: General Rule Go or No Go - 08-01-2006, 11:35 AM

Is there a general of thumb about when to, or when not to go for a ball that is close to either side of the line?

Thank you,
CM

If you can't decide if the ball is in or out, play it. Unless people are yelling OUT and it is close play it! If you play it and it is close, you get a chance to get the point. If you let it drop and it is in it is a major let down. If it is close to the line and you are playing it and have no calls from your team play it.

If no one called it, and you cannot personally decide - then play the ball. Nothing worse than letting it land right in, or on the line.

If someone complains that "hey that was out!" or "you should(n't) of played that ball!" - go "hey, sorry I couldn't tell, can you call it a little earlier than after the play was over next time?"

My two cents...

As with any indecision, play it first... ask questions later.

If your teamates are doing thier job they should be letting you know to play or not play. Your job is to track the ball and be in position. If they clearly communicate it's out (and you believe them LOL), don't play.

It's best to touch a ball even if it's impossible to improve (if it's going to be in or close) it sets the tone for the type of effor your team should give and rallies your defense.

Same as the other replies (when in doubt and no calls play it) except also add...

if you see a ball heading to the line, straddle or stand on the line and this will help you to better judge whether the ball is in or out depending what part of your body the ball is heading for...

I dig it

Hahahahaha, flash backs to high school freshman year when my coach starts screaming:

"STTRRAZZZZ! WHEN IN DOUBT, PLAY IT OUT"

Then I started to burst out laughing...

Lets just say I had a lot of suicides in store for me...

i tend to play it unless it is clearly out (i.e. you're right next to the bleachers)
you can help yourself by just paying close attention to where you are on the court in relation to the line.

nothing worse then letting a lobbed ball just drop and hit line...several players on my team do this and I absoutely get on them about it.

Actually there is one thing worse... I saw a player go for a ball and decide that it was out. She backed off the ball and it bounced off her foot.

Moral? If you think the ball is out, keep clear!
