Since one of my posts referred to the size mattering when playing VB, the question is does size really matter? Don't get mad it's just a question.

You can overcome a size disadvantage with exceptional quickness, strength and skill. Given the same quickness, strength and skill a taller player will be better. It's just plain physics. Don't confuse height with reach. Take a look at most national/international level players, most have long monkey arms (yeah, and 6'5 will get you a libero lol, 6'8 is a short hitter too )

They also have U-Volley for players under 6'1" (I believe) that has a lower net...somewhere between mens height and womens. I think details can be found in the USAV web site.

Yes, being short is a disadvantage. I'm 5'7". Not being able to put up a block is a career-limiter.

However, it doesn't diminish from my enjoyment of the game. I just have to be a little quicker and read the hit a little better.

lol..i'm 5'8" so I do have a major disadvantage over tall guys, especially tall athletic guys.

College-level and pro-level - there's no way I can compete but I manage pretty well in city leagues. My quickness tends to make up for my short stubby arms

I work exceptionally hard on my quickness and vertical so it's not bad, I get decent blocks and good kills and feel that I have earned the respect of my fellow vball competitors around town.

Blocking someone taller then you or hitting down line over outstreched arms of six footers almost always feels better then sex. ALMOST.

I'm amazed at the diversity of opinions. I think from my experience the only problem being shorter is blocking. I'm a hitter and can penetrate most blockers. I think its all about the position and function. I know that in my indoor team (6's) protects the weaker players on defense and over covers to absorb a heavy hitter.

Although the question has been answered. Size only matters what defending a block, and even then you can have a mean vert. Trust me when I say people have no clue, I have seen 5'5 AA women player stomp a 6'5" OPEN player.

With all these different heights being tossed around it leads me to ask.
What heights would one consider short? Men? Woman??

To answer the first question, no, i really don't think height matters, like everyone has been saying, all you need is speed, good technique and power. And why is everyone referring to just hitting and blocking? Did we forget about our setter and the libreo? I mean I'm 5"6, i only play back row and I'm pretty good. I'm OK with blocking and hitting, but thats not my specialty. I leave that to the tall girls. Heres a solution for short girls/guys, something i did myself, JUMP TRAINING. There are exercises and stuff that you can do to improve your jump.

So Again, I don't think Height Matters....
