I'm OK with blocking and hitting, but thats not my specialty. I leave that to the tall girls. Heres a solution for short girls/guys, something i did myself, JUMP TRAINING. There are exercises and stuff that you can do to improve your jump.

So Again, I don't think Height Matters....
alright, i agree with you to a certain extent. But, check this out, i'm 5'6" as well with a 36" vert. I play against guys who are 6'7". if i'm blocking, and they have the same amount of vertical jump as I do, i can't block them. they have a 13" advantage over me.
What you're saying about a setter/libero...the rules have changed a lot in the past, being able to double the ball on the first ball is a huge advantage for the taller players where they can just take a step forward and take it with their hands.
Among other things, a team comes down to versatility. The US National Team (mens) are all 6'3" or above. so, only being 5'6" has its limitations. You can only be a DS/L/Serve Specialist or one great bench warmer.
pretty much, size does matter

they're not many of them but how would world-class leapers like Nate Robinson do? He recently won the dunk competition. He's 5'7 and can jump the lights out. He has about a 48" vertical as he can clearly get over the rim. About an 11'1 reach. I'd say he could hit over most blockers, college or pro-level.

Being short myself though, one thing that we can't help is just it takes us a nano-second to get to block. Tall guys with outstreched arms can definitely get higher quicker but us dwarfs have to travel all the way from the bottom to get up over the net

I does not cease to amaze me how this topic is still being discussed. Again, what intrigues me the most, is that so many people have differing opinions!

What troubles me is not size but how size changes perception...

I can show you 10 people that are more powerful and better players at 5.10 then any 6.2 hitter, blocker or what ever..... Some of the shortest people I know are the best vb players I have ever seen. I would pit them against anyone an bet my house on the fact that they could no only keep up but most likely win a game.

This is not to say tall versions are not better but you have to be tall and really good not tall and fair.

Height definitly makes a big difference in both the indoor and outdoor game.

Everyone is saying I've seen this 5'9'' player kill a 6'2'' player, ok, must be a not so great 6'2'' player....

Watch the AVP how many players below 6'5'' are there?

Check out the rosters of the top open teams at USAV nationals, how many players below 6'5'' are there?

Check out the national team. how many players below 6'5'' are there?

Check out the Pro teams in Europe. how many players below 6'5'' are there?

Check those stats out, if you don't think height matters take a look at the top tier of the sport and you might change your mind

In volleyball, for guys, anything under 6'2 is short, even if a majority of the male population in America is 6' and under.

Nah, I just get to go against the 6'5'' guys all the time. I'm 6' and play rightside on the strongest USAV team in New England. I'm pretty good, and have a pretty impressive jump, but even with my jump, I'm severly outsized by those stupid 6'5'' outside hitters I'll see at nationals and at Philly next weekend in the Pop Idell tournament.

At the top levels 6'2'' is considered pretty small as well.

Pat Powers a few years back said he wouldn't even look at a kid unless he was 6'3" and still growing or 6'5" fully grown.....

I forget where I read it, there was an article on recruiting for vb. It pointed out that it's not just height that coaches look for but arm/wingspan. A 6'3" guy with a 9' reach is better than a 6'5" guy with a 8'10" reach, it's all about physics.... the guy with the longer arm has more 'head speed' to put it in golf terms.

Being 6' and a little heavier than most I surely see the benefits of having a guy who's 6'2" and 6'4" on my team, especially when the taller one's got monkey arms.
