Talking Tips For A Consistent Bump! - 04-09-2007, 11:09 PM

Ah yes, everyone wants to be able to spike or set, but what's more important than any of that begins with a good bump.

Stressing the importance of this skill and the ability to consistently put the ball up in a very control manner is always a hot topic. Let's start.
  • Stand. You've got to be able to stand with very good balance.
  • Practice leaning forward, sideways, and backward.
  • How good is your balance, and control? Pretty easy with two feet, huh, try it with one foot. A lot harder!
  • Get back to standing with both feet and in the ready position with your bump, Hands together.
  • Is your right hand in a fist, and your left hand clasps over it? or the other way? Is your fingers interlocked? or are you a palms up hand position? Those are all good, but do you know how to golf?
  • Ever notice the hand position of golfers when they are putting?
  • Notice how strangely interlace their fingers are?
  • They interlace their first index and the pinky finger. Well most of us don't know how to do that, but the secret here is in perfectly balancing the arms. Now that you know, you can use this in volleyball too.
  • Motion your arms like you would bump. See how much better the both of your arms move in unison compared to some of the other hand positions.
  • Don't forget to shrug your shoulders, keep them up and slightly forward. This is the bump position that your arms should be in. You should never be hit in the chest by a ball as long as your shoulders are shrugged.
  • Now try the bump motion, and keep your arms in perfect unison.
  • Well I think you should have the right idea for keeping balance in your arms now, but I haven't even cover leg balancing yet.
  • Back to the ready position now; find your center point. Find your balance. Lean forward, sideways, and backwards and practice your bump motion. Find that center point, and that point that which you would lose controlled balance. Slide your foot and find that balance.
  • Back to a normal stance and use your bump motion. Imagine you're putting a golf ball, but only using the motion for volleyball.
  • You should see how your body naturally adjusts by rotating at your torso. Apply the bump motion throughout this motion.
  • Now you should have the idea of bumping not only just directly in front of you, but also towards your side and at any angle, almost any angle.
  • You're on your way, but not there yet! Practice.
You know what to do! Do you have any tips let other know...
