Tips on serve receive - 10-17-2006, 11:57 PM

One of my teams has been struggling with serve receive. When I play men's we use a three across receive. The players on this particular team want to play four or five in a W or U. I'd call this and intermediate level, only a couple people jump serve and many women use an asian side arm and / or underhand.

Whatever tips or commentary people have would be appreciated.

Serve receive - 10-20-2006, 01:57 AM

I think more people on serve receive means more chances of miscommunication as well as more chance that the person you don't want to pass the ball will pass it. I would say the big thing to help determine whether to use a 3 person serve receive or to go with a 4 or 5 person is dependent on the athleticism of the players who will serve receive (can the 3 people back actually cover the court?) and also what your definition of intermediate level play is. I would say an intermediate level should be reasonably proficient enough at passing to be able to handle a 3 person serve receive if they practice it. My high school girls team (at a small high school of under 300 students) handles a 3 person serve receive with no problem and I've even had them switch to a 2 person receive on occasions when I've really wanted to be sure my best passers were always going to pass. Just my thought though.

If I'm serve receiving, I prefer everyone else clear the court...

I agree though... the fewer the better. Generally I play two person serve receive with the middle back person standing on the back line to see if the serve is going out. A lot of this has to do with playing beach doubles, but the fewer number of people... the less grey area there is on who gets what. Two receivers split the court in half and they both know who gets what.

Three people serve receive (or four with two people covering a step behind the 10 and up). If there are problems with communication than people don't know who the primary passers are. The libero is the primary passer so he should be put toward the center of the court. If a ball is served in between two people (one bing the libero) than it is the libero's ball.

Your serve receive all depends on the server. Lobs... You could have one receiver. If you have a server who it going to serve spots then the more people passing the less 'spots' to serve. And a hard jump server I would want three receivers with another person covering the ball that will roll over the tape.

I believe he's referring to league teams. I doubt they have a libero.

True liberos are usually only found on club, school, and national teams. When I say true liberos, I mean they pass $money$ 90% of the time. Most USAV teams use liberos as a better option than having their middles play defense and aren't really great passers... just better than the alternative.

I hope I am a "true libero" then.

Even if there isn't a libero then... put the best passers toward the middle of the court and use two or three passers. (I am assuming that you aren't facing great servers)

Libro - 03-19-2007, 06:07 PM

Having your best passer being on the opposite side of the server is also beneficial. If you have someone who can cover the court they will see the ball that much better and have the ability to pass more balls. As a libro, I prefered most to be in a 2 man and passing from the right side. You start adding more people into the mix it can get confusing.

Per VolleyballStud's comment, as a USAV Libro for 4 years I find that comment a little unfounded. The teams that succeeded and did well usually had a strong Libro to go along with strong hitters. The libro should be passing a majority of the balls and if that's the case they have to be pretty $Money$ if their team was going to have a chance to succeed.

I'm basing my comments on what I see in the Chicago area.

Googles, by any chance were you a libero in club or college?
