Transitioning from indoor to sand - 06-27-2007, 10:22 AM

Hi Everyone,
I'm playing in a doubles tourney this weekend with a girl who is an indoor college player, middle hitter, that has never played doubles before, let alone on the beach. What do you think are the most important things to tell her to adapt her game? (Besides the obvious....no open hand serve-receive, no tipping, etc)

No need for fancy tricks, gimmicks, or stunts.

Exxaggerate your moves, the passing, the setting, the approach for the spike ~ then roll shot!

in my 6 whole days of transitioning from new york indoor to san diego beach, i've found it's much more about finding the open spaces, much less about hitting the crap out of the ball.

oh, and remind her that sand is not really condusive to sprawling. i keep forgetting that.

tell her she will suck, don't get discouraged. Once you get the hang of outdoor, she'll love it!

Has it really been 6 days already?.... Didn't I just see you?

Who you serve to is more important than how hard you serve.

Good Targets:
Bad Passers
Bad Hitters
Partner of a bad setter

Block so your partner has less court to cover, not to stuff the ball down their throat.

Pay attention to the wind!

Don't block until the other team proves they can hit.
Pancakes just don't work.
Pass the ball high enough so your partner can get to it.
Communicate with your partner (you got it, in in in, mine mine mine, SHORT!, etc.,...)
Don't wear shoes
Do wear sunscreen

If it's not too late, get a couple of practice session in before the game. It does take a while getting used to the footwork and positioning in sand, both of which will affect her passing and approach (hitting)
