Fat Guy Blog - 07-09-2006, 12:30 PM

OK, so I've decided to create my own feature on the board

This Thursday will mark the end of my second (third Lynn?) season of playing somewhat competative volleyball. It's also been the first season that I played USAV regional ball.

After completely falling in love with the sport in the last two years I've decided to take my game to a whole new level. Many of you who already know me know that I'm a little on the heavier side, and for a guy who's only 5'10" that's a disadvantage. Over the last year plus I've lost over 40lbs. Primarily motivated by my desire to play better ball.

I lost the weight primarily through diet and supplementation, and a healthy dose of ball once if not three times a week. Before I tore a tendon in my elbow I was also in the gym twice a week for a few months.

Here's my plan: In order to stay extra focused on my goals I have to hold myself accountable. That's worked OK so far but I figure if I put myself and my plan out there I'll hold myself accountable to you guys too, sometimes not wanting to let other people down is a greater motivation for me. So, I'm going to keep a blog here and you guys can follow along and offer any suggestions and encouragement. I'm also hoping that there are some other people who read this and get serious about their program as well.

Once the indoor season is over (thursday when team Random will be seeded #1 for the playoffs) I'm going to put everything in motion. My goal is to be in the gym 3 days a week, and in the Pilates studio twice. I'm also going to revamp my nutrition plan to eat pretty seriously for six out of seven days. More details on all that to come.

In the gym I'm going to start out with a ten minute cardio warm up (treadmill or eliptical). Then jump into a resistance circuit 12 muscle targets starting out with two sets of 15 (if it's AM & I'm pressed for time or three sets of 12 if it's PM) with 45 seconds rest between sets, alternating muscle targets. This will double as a resistance and cardio workout, and it's fun!

At the pilates studio I'm going to listen carefully to my highly trained & skilled instructor (Love you wifey ) and hope to target my core and also get some work in on the jump board.

As far as ball goes I'd like to play at least once or twice a week outdoors just to keep my San Diego ball control skills high

In the next installment I'll go through and put in writing some of my key stats that I'm working to improve.

-Thanks for reading!

Been a few months and I was wondering if you are active in both your regime and your blogging.

NewEnglandRT:
Good luck!

Here are two websites you may want to check out:
fitday.com
calorie-count.com

Both these sites are free and make it very easy to track your calories and macronutrients. I am trying to drop some body fat myself and have been starting to log everything I eat into a journal at calorie-count.com in order to keep myself accountable.

Alright jay! i know you can do it. Maybe you should just come out to the 619 and work on some plyometrics. Forget the girly pilates...

Do you have a weight goal in mind? how much do you want to lose?

Thanks for the encouragement guys/gals!

cheetah, I'll def. have to check out those two sites!

Manzi, as far as a weight goal..... I don't want to specify. It's more of a performance and BMI goal. If I can perform at a decent level @ 250 great, if it's 205 so be it. That'll take a couple years though. I want to keep a 1-2 lb per week pace, as from all the research I've done that's the safest and most likely maintainable. It's about what I did the first year.... and I wasn't really trying.

Hey NewEnglandRT:

Muscle weights more then fat so don't be discouraged if the numbers on the scale don't move at first.....If this happens you may be losing bodyfat and gaining muscle similtaneously. I think it's great that you are going to judge progress by your BMI and your performance....I think these are more important indicators then the nunber on the scale. You may also want to have your measurements and body fat taken by a personal trainer at your gym.
If you need a resource feel free to ask me....I'm a certified personal trainer through NASM (www.nasm.org) and I love giving fitness advice

I hate BMI's. They tell me I am obese! Well not so much anymore but they tell me I am very overweight.

Looks like NERT won his league championships and will begin his blog on a high note.

Indeed we (WE) won! OK, I'm going to go today and get some more accurate information on some of my stats to post. Even though I really don't want to. I suppose it makes sense to do it, as it will hold me accountable and that's the whole point of this silly thing.
