I know there are many different techniques to volley, but this one is a little out there. Being 5'6", i'm pretty big on defense and passing, so having the middle pass is a little far fetched for me. Teach your middle to follow the setter for a quick, even on a bad pass. ie; toss a free ball to your DS or Libero and force the middle off the net. Maybe even have the passer make a pass 5' in front of the target so the offense has to make an adjustment to the play. You understand where i'm going? If the kid is gonna be there on the court, tell her 5 other people are relying on her and not a reason to look good in spandex for the football players.
In a freeball situation, in every game I've ever seen, middles always handpass to the setter and run quicks. It's the fastest paced play available in the game.

I fully agree. A middle that can transition off the net and handpass will really open up an offense to the quick 1 or even a backside slide. Don't park your middle at the net and force the outside to come up. You should have the middle back off and cover the gap. This will also give the setter a clear zone at the net to run the offense.

I'm wondering if this is a situation where maybe the coach needs to learn from the player, instead of the other way around.

I wouldn't trust this girl to pass if she can't even transition properly.
here: yes, run the middle with a "pass and go" offense, i agree...just not this girl. If she's going to be in the setters way, her passing is going to get her in the way of someone who can efficiently and consistently get the ball to target every time.

"Fellow coaches - HELP! (This girl is about 14.)"

Manzi, you're talking about a 14 year old girl who probably JUST started playing ball, and you're saying that she shouldn't be taught to correctly transition and handpass? Obviously she doesn't understand what she's supposed to do, or is afraid to do it for any of various reasons. She needs to be taught the right way now, while she's learning, or her bad tendencies will become habits that will be impossible to break as she progresses in playing... IF she progresses at all without being taught properly.
