Question Ankle Brace - 12-09-2005, 04:27 PM

So, Like many players I am in search of a decent ankle brace to prevent further ankle injuries. I have rolled my ankle a couple of times and finally have decided that I should find a brace that I want to wear for preventative measures. I bought an Active Ankle T2 but I am just not really happy with it. I was wondering what people have used, what they like and why. I'd like something that's kind of "low profile". On the interest list are the; Bauerfeind Malleoloc Ankle Brace, McDavid Ultra Hinged AB, McDavid Ankle X, and the Allsport Ortho II. FYI www.ankleshop.com seems to have good prices on stuff. Thanks for any info.

Well, since no one was able to give me any advice I have inadvertently begun a test of ankle braces on my own. Right now I have used an aircast, the T2, the malleoloc, and I recently bought a McDavid as well. So, once I get through with trying out the last one I will let you know how I think they have performed. And then anyone else in need of some advice can have it.

Just read your post, I didn't signup up will after you asked your questions, however I do have some information.

I agree the Active Ankle T2 is junk, digs into your ankle and if not applied correctly it will cause an injury, not prevent one. I have heard great things about the McDavid ANKLE X Ankle Brace, but have yet to try it in a real game. I have AirCast AirSport Ankle Brace, and actually like it a lot. I would suggest trying out the AirCast.

Personally it all about the how hard you play and what surfaces.

Hope this helps,
Peepers

I use The Bauerfeind Malleoloc Ankle Stirrup, absolutley love the thing. Doesn't destroy my shoes, provides great support, isn't bulky.

In theory all of the ankle braces are just about as strong as each other, they are actually made to give way before you tear your ACL or damage your knee.

So ideally, you just want to use the one that works best/ feels most comfortable to you.

I like the Bauerfeind's, the plastic part wraps around the tendon lines of your ankle. Most the time I can't even feel that I have it on. Its great.

Here is the compilation of ankle braces I have tried up to this point (FYI- I am not a small player and hence don’t have skinny ankles and calves like some of you may and this may have influenced my following opinions on these products)

Active Ankle T2- Support: Pretty good no noticeable issues, Comfort: no problems that I can put a finger on it just doesn’t feel right to me. Notes: Large bottom that must be worn in a shoe and is a pain to deal with a bit.

Aircast AirStirrup- Support: Very good, Comfort: actually very comfortable, Notes: I got this when I originally (hahaha) sprained my ankle 3 years ago from the doctor. It isn’t hinged and doesn’t allow much of a range of motion so it isn’t the best for playing with. Can wear this with or with out shoes.

Bauerfeind Malleoloc- Support: very good, Comfort: initially good but after a few times I developed blisters on my instep. Notes: I think properly fitted by a trainer this brace would be more comfortable. I am going to attempt some mods using a hair dryer and see what happens. What I really like about it is that it is low profile and can be worn with any or no shoes.

McDavid Ultra Hinged Ankle Brace- Support: ok, still had some pain, Comfort: very comfortable, Notes: this brace is pretty low profile but is designed for using with a shoe.

The real question is which one am I going to play with tomorrow…. Probably the active ankle, but I will definitely give the malleoloc another shot after mods.

Of course I could also do some exercises to strengthen my ankle or go to the doctor or something….

A Test - 05-19-2006, 08:35 AM

So, last night, sloppily playing 2's after our regular league play, I inadvertantly tested out the bauerfeind malleoloc. It happened when i went to do my nifty ballerina hit at the net and didn't quite make it down smoothly. I think I would have done some more major damage had I not been wearing it, but instead I only have a slight strain/ sprain (inside of the ankle). I'm pretty sure I will even make it through most of the Pat Powers clinic starting tomorrow without too much pain!
