Here is the compilation of ankle braces I have tried up to this point (FYI- I am not a small player and hence don’t have skinny ankles and calves like some of you may and this may have influenced my following opinions on these products)
Active Ankle T2- Support: Pretty good no noticeable issues, Comfort: no problems that I can put a finger on it just doesn’t feel right to me. Notes: Large bottom that must be worn in a shoe and is a pain to deal with a bit.
Aircast AirStirrup- Support: Very good, Comfort: actually very comfortable, Notes: I got this when I originally (hahaha) sprained my ankle 3 years ago from the doctor. It isn’t hinged and doesn’t allow much of a range of motion so it isn’t the best for playing with. Can wear this with or with out shoes.
Bauerfeind Malleoloc- Support: very good, Comfort: initially good but after a few times I developed blisters on my instep. Notes: I think properly fitted by a trainer this brace would be more comfortable. I am going to attempt some mods using a hair dryer and see what happens. What I really like about it is that it is low profile and can be worn with any or no shoes.
McDavid Ultra Hinged Ankle Brace- Support: ok, still had some pain, Comfort: very comfortable, Notes: this brace is pretty low profile but is designed for using with a shoe.
The real question is which one am I going to play with tomorrow…. Probably the active ankle, but I will definitely give the malleoloc another shot after mods.
Of course I could also do some exercises to strengthen my ankle or go to the doctor or something….
