Blocking A Serve - 03-23-2006, 09:47 AM

I know this is something that is NOT allowed but have you ever wanted to just Block a serve? Seriously, stopping a serve in my opinion is just damn funny, I've actually done it in a game and everyone, stands there as if you just killed a kitten. I have to admit, I've done this a few times in my life and the greatest part is every-time it's done the other team is in so much shock that we win the game.

It really freaks people out!

If this were a rule the game would be completely different. Serving would have a entirely new meaning.....

Any thoughts...

HAHAHA!!! Did that once and it is so funny to see the look on some people's faces, , jaws drop the total look of confusion ("WHAT JUST HAPPENED, WAS THAT LEGAL"..."DOES THIS PERSON KNOW THE RULES OF VOLLEYBALL AT ALL"). Best is the guy that sees no humor in it and starts to argue "THATS NOT LEGAL" and proceeds to explain the rule of attacking the ball DDDDUUUUHHHH!!!!!!

Blocking the serve... - 03-24-2006, 08:37 AM

I may be mistaken here but upuntil about 10 years ago in some parts of the US of A Blocking a serve was legal... Now days it is just darn funny... We (the teams I coach) will on occassion have a "game" where each team can make up there own rule... That one comes up more often than any other... Thanks for bringing the memories back and making me smile!

Actually, I loved your suggestion, we tried this on Sunday and it was DAMN funny...... We stated both sides could make up one rule, the other side said they want to hit the ball up to4 times but the fourth time if the forth time was needed they could only use their heads, we chose blocking the serves. (and only for one game) It was GREAT!

P.S. We won 21 - 9 <--------YAHOOOOoooooo

No more cast, no more crutches, no more wheel chair, and yes more volleyball!

Mr. Owl, how many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop?

A person can still legally block a serve, but they have to keep it on their side of the net.

It's definitely funny as long as the perpetrator knows that such antics are taboo. I find it funny when my friends do it just to be a smart-ass.

It's less funny when some lunk-head shows up and actually thinks that reaching over and blocking a serve (thus preventing it from coming over) is actually allowed and starts arguing the point.

Even funnier is your use of the term lunk-head.

As long as they don't jump while the block is occuring, right?
And does that block count as a hit, or can they block and hit it up, as in the case with blocking a spike?

It's a fault to block serve. A legal block has nothing to do with a jump. It's about having hands up, higher than the height of the net and deflecting an attack.

The first contact on the serve receive is the first of the team's contact. If you argue the point that you blocked it up, you would lose the rally then. If you played the ball up with a blocking motion regardless of jumping or not, and have your hands above the height of the net and in the front zone of the court, you have to keep the ball on your side of the court for a second contact from another teammate. Otherwise it would constitute as an attack on the serve and that is a fault too.

I only worded to point out the fact that a blocking action is not always a block. It may infact be a ball handling action as intended as the first of team's contact. Also when a person's hands are below the height of the net, it can never be counted as a block, even off of a spike.
