Angry Can this be a valid rule?.. - 05-22-2008, 05:01 PM

Hey all,

So I joined this Big City team (d4, pretty much just above beginner level) for fun.

The first 2 games we did side-out scoring. Those took a long time, so the 3rd game was decided to be 25 points rally.

Cool, no problem.

Until I went to serve, and it touched the net, onto the opposing side. And it was called.

WTF! Has anyone ever heard of going RALLY SCORING without the LET SERVE rule?.........

I was pretty pissed. But is there any validity in that? Has anyone ever played in a tournament/league in which this was a rule?

Thanks in advance!
-Lucas

Yeah I've hit up some local open gyms before and they tell me it's rally scoring. suddenly there is a let serve and it's called. I get really frustrated with that. Actually, that's how my women's league ran and it's fairly competitive. Of course they also were trying to call me on open hand receiving too.

Let serve and rally point scoring is two totally separate parts of the game.

They said rally point scoring...no where did they say we'll also include let serve. Example: No one specified 1995 USAV SOS rules and then say they'll now use 1997 International RPS rules where ball is allowed contact with any part of the body, just to point out that 2000 USAV RPS rules to include the let server are not what they're using.

So what kind of rules are you playing with? Volleyball rules...I'd be pissed off too, when they say volleyball rules...
NHFS, NCAA, USAV, or FIVB?

In general most places play with either current or old rules but unless it is a USAV event, it's a good idea to find out what the house rules are.

I know when I play outdoor tournaments every where has their own rules. Some variations are:
  • Height of ball that guys can touch in front on 10' in R-Coed
  • Touching Guy Lines
  • "Clean" hand sets
  • Scoring
  • Let Serves
  • Block +2/ Block doesn't count
  • Kick Serves

In my experience officiating city league volleyball there are a few who still use the sideout scoring method. If this is the case in your area then the ruling was correct. Even though the third game is rally scoring, there is no 'Let Rule' in sideout scoring. The set format does not dictate the let rule or not. Only if the whole match is rally scoring does the let rule apply.
