CHo-Pat knee brace - 01-14-2008, 12:49 PM

Anyone who's seen me play knows I wear Patella straps.

Well I was looking through a magazine the other day and saw an ad for a slightly different brace. The Cho-Pat Dual Action Knee Strap ( https://secure.cho-pat.com/products/...roduct_type=10 ). I was wondering if anyone had any experience or thoughts on this product. Anything that can alleviate jumper's knee is going to be a boone to my game.

i've seen a few track runners with those. but I've seen more with just the single strap, so I'm not entirely sure which one is more effective. good question though(meaning, I'll be coming back b/c to benefit from any answers, lol).

Well I just ordered a pair (since both knees have been known to bother me) and while they won't be here for my tourney this weekend, I'm sure I'll be playing more and I'll be able to give them a good review. I also ordered a book Treat Your Own Knees. I'll give a review of that on here too since I'm sure I'm not the only one beating his body up on the court.

To lessen the impact on your knees. Use the Quad machines to strengthen your Hamstrings and Upper Quad. Your very tall so this puts more impact on your longer bones. Without thick muscles in your legs to support them you may hurt yourself and I do not think the idea of you blowing out your ACL down there would be any more help. You might break your bone very easily.

I am very interested to here the review from you on the braces. Good luck with them. I may order them in the future myself.

One of the guys who occaisionally plays for RVC uses one. From the brief talk we had about it he swears by it. He may play this weekend and I'll give you more feedback.

Well they came in the mail. The actual items look high quality but the packaging was a little weak (plastic ziplock-esque bags). I don't really care about the packaging though as that just ends up in the trash. I'll try them on tonight and try them out this thursday.

I'd like to point out that the reason I am getting them is knee pain associated with patellar tendonitus or jumper's knee. If you go to Cho-Pat Sport Medical Devices - 1.800.221.1601 you'll see that they are for this and a variety of other sources of knee pain. I do not believe that they are for acl or mcl tears.

Six weeks in a sling nice. - 01-22-2008, 01:38 PM

Six weeks in a sling for me and therapy for my shoulder.

Guess I will just watch from the sidelines like when I blew out my ACL. No the braces for ACL or MCl cost at least 1K.

No Surgery just therapy. Not enough of a tear for surgery.
Though I have known some with this injury and it can be most unpleasant for a long time.

Bummer sooner this is over the better. Oh well lots of book time.

Well I played last night and I wore my new knee braces and I'm not sure about them. Here are a couple of things I noticed:
  • My knees were sweating firecely. I was wearing addidas long pants but these things were REALLY warm.
  • I like my patellar straps tight and the brace on my left kneeseemed to fit fine but the exact same size on my right knee seemed way too big. I don't think my legs are that differently sized.
  • My left knee seemed fine through all six games.
  • My right knee started to ache a little bit in game 5 and beyond
  • I'm walking around fine all day today and only my right knee is bothering my a little.

I'm going to try them again the next time I play. I'm also going to try to switch the braces to make sure that they are the same size even though they are both labeled L. I'm also going to try to make sure I'm putting them on the same way on both legs.

While wearing them, I did notice a few things. They are a little bulky but didn't seem to impact my playing in any negative way. At one point I sprinted after a ball and felt no knee pain whatsoever. I was playing middle and did a lot of jumping and really didn't get all that sore.

The biggest indicator I normally use to see how sore my knees are is the morning after when I walk down my first flight of stairs. This morning's walk didn't really stick out in my mind so either my knees are getting better or these straps are pretty good.

Confused.... - 01-28-2008, 12:12 PM

Well I played again with my Cho-Pat Dual Action knee straps again yesterday in MC+. The thing I prefer about the standard patellar knee straps is that I can feel them when I put them on. I like them tight and things definitely feel better; however, I can't argue with the benefits of the cho-pats. Here it is the day after a tournament and my knees aren't any stiffer than normal, I'm walking fine and I even decided to throw in a few leg exercises when I hit the gym this morning.

So far these things are looking like a good investment.
