In his sophomore year in 1998, he began to hit his stride. He led the team in kills (519) and digs (153) and was ranked fourth in the nation with 6.49 kills per game. His best match that year was against Loyola-Chicago, when he had a double-double, putting down 44 kills and helping out defensively with 17 digs.

In his junior year, he played in 74 matches and had 458 kills. Once again he was ranked fourth in the nation with 6.19 kills per game. He was also named an AVCA First Team All-American. On his own team, he was fourth in digs (137), digs per game (1.85), and his serve was a tremendous weapon as well, as he had 30 aces.

Entering the 2000 season and his senior year, Soto had played in 242 games and has accumulated 1,488 kills, which places him fourth in IPFW history behind Jay Golsteyn, who put down 1,939 kills between 1986-1989. And as of the writing of this article, Soto had 1,787 kills, just 152 shy of breaking that record.

So far this season, he has helped IPFW to an 8-4 overall record and a 5-1 MIVA conference record. Early on, he seemed to be carrying the team and they struggled a little with some losses. As the season progressed, Ball finally started getting his team to spread the offense around and with Soto still putting down double-digit kill figures, other players started helping out more and more. With the offense more balanced, the Mastodon's have started winning on a more consistent basis.
