How have you improved your game in the past year? - 02-09-2007, 10:48 AM

No one is perfect, there's always room for improvement. What have you done to improve your game in the past year? Have you lost weight, camps, clinics etc. The question is for all, tell us your experiences.

I just got back from a volleyball vacation....(Volleyball Vacations - Play & Party with the Pros) a week of training and clinics in Cancun, Mexico, with Al-B, Sinjin Smith, Michelle More, Suzanne Stonebarger, Mark Kerins, and T-Bone (Eric Masson) who are all pros on the AVP our, or ex-pros. I highly recommend it....being a total volleyball fanatic, it was the best vacation I'd ever been on, and most attendees have been to many volleyball vacations, so you know it's gotta be good! We're already planning our next one later this year!

Anyway, besides participating in the training and clinics held throughout the week, I signed up for extra training with Dr. Corrodo, a sports-specific trainer from Canada, who was also on the trip....he ran a training group every morning around 8:30am. He worked us out in the sand, having us do sprints, agility, and plyometric exercises. And the coolest part of it all....he took video of each of us doing our approach, spike, and landing, then analyized it in slow motion and depending on what he saw, told us what we needed to do to get more power in our spike. IT WAS VERY COOL. I gained lots of useful information and learned the things I should be working on when I got home from the vacation.

I would absolutely love to go....I won't tell you that I didn't think about!
However I live in Phila and it is on a weeknight....and I think Albany is about 6 hours away from me! Anyway, I am going to try to watch it on the AVP website....they are broadcasting it live starting at 6:30pm

Smile Improving my game - 02-11-2007, 06:19 PM

I went to two clinics, Bob Bertucci's and Pat Powers, they were great. I also dumped the team I was playing with since they just didn't care to improve and joined/formed some new teams with people who know how to play and and want to improve. Playing with people who know HOW to play makes all the differance in the world.

I began playing with more people who know HOW to play in the last year, that makes the game so much more enjoyable.

I also gave up playing in one of the crap leagues I was in, in favor of playing in more competitive ones (yankee tourneys).

I don't celebrate mediocrity. If I miss-hit a ball and it lands successfully; well, thats more accident than intention so i consider it just as bad as if I would have pelted it into the net.

I've learned a whole lot this year. 90% of which has been in the last 6 months since joining VBLI, Yankee, and Team Random.

Playing with more like-minded people has really helped. Like Sandy said, playing with others who are also looking to improve their game and those that are better already is key.

Wow, good to see Bertucci is still out there working. I went to one of his camps when I was in high school and he recruited me to play at Newark, but it was Newark so I declined. Been doing a lot of training in the gym this offseason, with a workout focused on increasing vert inches and have been making some real great gains so far. We got indoor sand courts so it means more time doing drills and playing tournies in the winter, so the skills can keep improving. The biggest thing in the last couple years has been working on mental conditioning. I'd recommend Mental Edge by Ken Baum for anyone interested in developing this area. Another month or two and it is on the road to find the top competition, nothing like getting pushed real hard to motivate improvement.

cheetah, i thought albany was great. i was able to meet all 8 avp pros that were there. it took me about 2 hours to get there. but afterwards because of the snow/ice storm we had i left at 23:00 and didn't get home until 03:00. 4 hour drive home!!!!! but it was worth it going to albany,i would go again if i get chance. cheetah. i don't blame you, 6 hours is very far to watch avp players. dex

Wish I could say I did. Work and winter depression kinda got in the way this year. Knees and back got worse after a car accident in October/November. My ability to run the 5-1 effectively has improved, then again the people I'm comparing myself to aren't that great to begin with.
