Injuries on The Court! - 10-09-2006, 02:16 PM

The past months have been nothing more then surreal. My team as seen not one but to severe injuries, both nothing while playing together in our local league. One injury was a fractured cheek or some such horrible thing and the other was a compound back injury. Additionally, another friend was knocked down in a TX tournament was injured playing an Open level where a player rolled under the net for a failing ball during a block. Add several rolled ankles and a few badly sprain wrists and hands made the last few weeks pretty bad.

Have you seen or experienced any injuries yourself in the past few months?

I've seen guys roll ankles and suffer various sprains and whatnot over the years, but I've been lucky enough to never witness anyone else do anything really debilitating. The only two truly serious injuries that I've seen on the court have both happened to me, and both recently.

Just over 5 months ago I suffered only my second serious volleyball injury that's cost me game time in roughly 16 years of high level ball. While I was blocking, the hitter came WAY under the net. I came down on his instep and rolled my ankle 90 degrees (the sole of my foot was now verticle and could rest flat against my other leg), tearing ligaments and ripping bone chips off where they attached. So my 2nd summer in a row was shot (I tore stuff in my thumb while blocking LAST spring and missed the entire summer of 2005 as well). But I've had a miraculaously quick recovery and have been practicing with my USAV team for three weeks now.

Well, if there was an elbow in your kidney either you've got a rediculous hidden vertical or you guys didn't have much chance at blocking that ball to begin with ?!?

I have no vert, lost 20pds, got 4 inchs more on my vert.

I was on the way down, however, you left out the other possibilities: The other blocker was not lined up properly or they didn't hold form when coming down, transition, transition, transition.

P.S. It was not the Kidney, but close.

Lesson Learned!
