Meeting New Players - 10-26-2006, 01:46 PM

We've all met other volleyball players in the most unexpected places while going through our normal lives.

Where has this happended to you and how did volleyball come up?

Jason,

Glad you came out last night to Hamden. Hope you had fun. The level of play there varies based on attendance. That was probably an average night for us. Everyone take note... bars + volleyball t-shirts = meeting new players.

I'll add one more...

After all the formal talk during an interview a few months ago the hiring manager and I started discussing personal interests. I mentioned all my sports related activities; going to the gym, martial arts, snowboarding, then after I mentioned volleyball the manager got up and went over to his desk as I kept rattling off other activities. He came back to the table to show me a picture of a pristine sand court that he had built in his parents backyard when he was younger. Needless to say the conversation quickly changed to be entirely volleyball-centric.

I never got the job (experience vs. education battle), but I'll never forget what turned out to be one of the longest interviews of my life. Who knows, maybe I accidentally six-packed him somewhere, sometime and he's still a little bitter. Maybe he's on this forum, reading this now. Oh, well.

Where do you play in Hamden? When I'm not indoor rock climbing on wednesday nights, I may be looking to play.

I play with Rev. there...we play at the new Hamden middle school on
Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:30 -10. The cost is $3 per night. You should attend sometime, it would be good to raise the level of play there on a regular basis. As Rev said, the quality of play varies each night based on who attends.

AirDiney and I were at the 99 restaurant in Orange like right after it opened and we happened to be dressed all grubby becuase we were going to go play volleyball after dinner. Well, I apparently am not a shy person and so we started talking to the waitress who asked if we had come from the gym or something. Found out she had played volleyball in high school for a couple of years and wanted to play again. I ended up walking out of the restaurant with the waitresses number on our receipt in case we needed a sub ever. LOL.

We've got a friend mark who seems to be able to sniff players out at a distance. He's got a phone book with what is likely to be at least a thrid of the players in the southern new england areas numbers. He's not afraid to ask either.

I have to credit him with getting me into higher level VB.

Most of the people I have met to play volleyball that were not on a volleyball court (or through here) have not worked out well. People hear that I play at work and have talked to me about it and then when I see them play it usually has a flavor of "Family Reunion" ball.

Maybe I just need to wear my VBLI shirts more often.
