I got the Cobra system. It did arrive on the scheduled delivery date, too! Unfortunately the delivery date missed that last two days of 80 degree weather we had in Chicago and arrived on the day that the temp dropped into the 50's. Looks like it will be a little while before I can set it up and make sure all the pieces are there...

Hello everyone!

I was wondering if anyone could give me some additionnal advice on the portable net systems.

I think you've covered the Cobra very well, but I still don't know much about the Viper and it's very hard to find information about it (other than the basics).

The thing is, I'm looking to buy a net quite soon, but the cobra is just a tad out of my budget. So I was wondering:

- Have any of you played with the Viper? What do you think?
- How does it compare to a Park and Sun Spectrum 2000 or an Ultimate Systems Set (one of the same price range)?
- Does it also take a sledgehammer to set up?
- What are the main differences with the cobra?

It would make my life a lot easier if you could help me with any of these questions, or any other advice for that matter. I've been looking for months now and I find it hard to make a decision.

Oh, and I use my net with friends (recreationally competitive), once to three times a week, almost always on sand and for 4 months in the year. (summer only lasts that long here, unfortunately)

Thanks in advance!!!

Good advice... I did after reading ur post, but to no avail. I did contact Gared Sports after that (makers of the Mongoose, which looks almost identical to the cobra) and got answers to my questions about THEIR light model (so i dont know if it applies to the viper). Their light model does also require a sledgehammer and the main difference is the size of the poles.

In any case, I have opted out of those systems. I live in Canada, so it's a real pain since I can't get delivery here for them and would have had to go to my grandmother's house in vermont to pick it up. You wouldn't believe how difficult it is to find a decent portable system that isn't marked up 200%.

So I went with availability and good sense, and ordered the Park and Sun Tournament Flex 1000 from ebay straight to my home. It's a downgrade even from the Spectrum 2000, but hopefully it'll get the job done.

Thanks anyways!

Sorry about the late reply, but I can answer your questions:

- Have any of you played with the Viper? What do you think? Yes, it's an excellent low budget system but not as durable as its parent, Corba. The Viper lacks the tournemant abuse a system can take at an event. I mean, you may have to reset the net once if you are playing 8hrs of serious VB, which includes a few more then normal net contacts. The Cobra can withstand serious abuse. I've actually abuse a few of these myself.

- How does it compare to a Park and Sun Spectrum 2000 or an Ultimate Systems Set (one of the same price range)? In what way? I mean no guy wires is no guy wires. More play space and less chance of injury. The prices on these systems are all about the same.

- Does it also take a sledgehammer to set up? Yes, but a 4 pound mini one that will fit in the bag. The Cobra will require an 8pder also will fit i the bag.

- What are the main differences with the cobra? Abuse and warranty, the Cobra has a life time warranty, and this I have tested. We know a promoter that has had his Cobras system for over 8 years and still hasn't retired them.

No it's active all summer. I just moved it to another location so that VBLI.com stays advertisement free as well as keeping the over all concept of not promoting one product vendor or service over another. I will be posting the new link to everyone shortly. For now: http://www.volleyballinthepark.com/deals.htm
