Odd Volleyball Tips - 06-24-2007, 10:25 PM

I just played at a tournament and I learned the oddest tip which could be applied to a bunch of different things but I had never thought about applying it to vball. So what is the purpose of this thread? I thought I'd see if you guys had any slick ideas or suggestions that might be vball related. Maybe it's deflate your ball before you take it on a flight or use spit to clean the dust off the bottom of your shoes.

What was the tip that I got today at the tournament? Take your sweaty smelly protective gear (in my case it was patella straps), let them dry out, put them in a plastic bag and throw them in the freezer to kill the bacteria. I already knew parents who did this to their kids stuffed animals. I just never thought about doing it to my sports gear.

There are 10 kinds of people in this world. Those who understand binary and those who don't.

Eat pickles or drink a bit of pickle juice during a tournament to avoid muscle cramps. Works like a charm. Also if you get a cramp it will get rid of it.

I usually just eat a banana for potassium. that works as well...and not as odd...

That's is one very odd tip...
HMMMppp??? That's the first that I've heard of freezing to kill bacteria. I'd just thought if would kill the fungus or maybe make it dormant.

I've got one really odd tip...sleep. Rest while you can...

One of my outdoor partners used to eat baby food during tournaments because it is already broken down and the nutrients and things you need to stay energized and healthy get into your system faster.

Invigorate yourself with cold water/shower and then eat some peppers to heat you up! Or it could just send you into shock and cramps.

I stole this off of the River 105.9 radio station website. It's not exactly volleyball related but with the heat index being maybe 100 today... I thought it's somewhat interesting for anyone who might try to get outside and play.

HOT WEATHER FACTS
Wednesday 06-27-2007 9:43am ET
Summer is here, and it’s hot. So here are some hot weather facts you can use from ABC News:

Eating spicy foods will help you cool down. True. Eating a super-spicy meal induces sweating, which helps you feel cooler. And people from the hottest places on the planet tend to eat spicy cuisine; like Mexico, Malaysia, and India. But nutritionist Diane Radler says the smartest way to stay cool is to drink plenty of cold liquids.

Dry heat is better than humid heat. True, sort of. When you sweat in dry heat, the moisture on your skin evaporates and helps cool your body. But in humid air, the sweat clings to your skin, making you feel sticky. But if you’re perspiring a lot in dry air, it means a lot of fluid is evaporating, and you need to replace it quickly.

Hot weather doesn’t affect the medicines you normally take. That's false. According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, a lot of medications make it difficult to control body temperature. So, before you spend a lot of time in the heat, ask your doctor or pharmacist about possible side effects.

During a heat wave, Texans cope better than New Yorkers. That’s true. People who spend a lot of time in scorching temperatures get used to it and find it less bothersome. The fact is, more people die in heat waves in Northern cities, because they’re not used to the heat.

Sports drinks help you beat the heat. That's only true if you’re an athlete. Sports drinks were designed for athletes sweating through hot weather. But if you’re a couch potato, you don’t need the extra electrolytes, and the added sugar might make you feel even more thirsty. Your best bet is to avoid sports drinks, caffeine and alcohol – and stick with cold water.

Avoid sports drinks, caffeine, and alcohol??? There goes my whole theory on liquid consumption!
