hello, i have question. anyone feel free to answer. i have played vb at several gyms. this question is pertaining to power. some players i have seen hit the ball and the ball bounces and hits high on the wall. when i hit the ball,there is bounce but nowheres near the bounce on a power hitter. sooo, question, what do i need to get the extra power so when i hit the ball it'll go high on the wall???? 2ndly, about blocking. when i block someone i'll feel it real good on the hands. i am not sure the person blocking my ball feels the same? bottom line, pertaining to the power, what do i need to do so when i spike the ball, the blocker will pay the piper on their hands. hahaha, dex
ps, about 2's. for me it can be tough hitting the open spot? i mean this is what happens: i look for the open and it's open but when i actually spike the ball it's covered. so what did i miss? email dex2330@aim.com thank you | | | | | | | | Player

What you need...
( 2 ) 5# dumbbells
a place to lay down on your stomach.
1.) Lay down on your stomach on the floor with your arms straight up over your head.
2.) Grab the two dumbbells and raise your arms straight up about 6" off the floor with your palms down.
3.) Then rotate your thumbs up and hold for 5 seconds.
4,) Rotate your palms down again.
5.) Lower your arms to the floor.
6.) Repeat immediately with no rest when you lower your arms.
Do this for 3 sets of 15 reps. If this becomes too easy, increase the number of reps or the length of time you hold with your arms raised from 5 seconds to 6 seconds or more. This should give you added power to your spikes. | | | | | | | | Settin` the Pace

This is coming from shoulder muscles and how much you crunch your abs when you swing - it also depends on where you are contacting the ball.
If you work your abs a lot - and make sure you use them on your approach you can provide a little extra snap on the ball. This makes your swing a bit faster making the ball hit a little harder.
As for 'hurting' a blockers hands. It's all about where you hit them. You can rocket a ball at thier hands - and if it hits the heals of thier palms it will never hurt. Good places to aim are - jumping hiegher than them and hitting; thumbs, pinkies (this causes jams) or swiping it across thier hands, or hitting it through thier hands into thier head.
Normally you can get one of these in before they wise up on thier blocking. | | | | | | | | Rookie

A real good follow-through will add some juice to your spikes too. Volleyball is much more about control as it is raw srtegnth. It's about controlling the ball with your swing. The more control you have the more speed you can eventually put on your hits.
Also if you are playing 2's and the court seems to be covered every time you hit the ball somewhere, I would say that the defense is reading you pretty well. They are anticipating where you are going to hit it. In 2's that is a big part of the game. Mix it up a litte; become adept at hitting different parts of the court with your swing. Add in a few roll shots to keep the defense honest; read the defense, adapt to it as they read you.

I also had a huge increase in the power of my spikes when I worked on triceps. I use the crossover machines at the gym due to their range of motion and the ability to do so many variations of tricep exercises on one machine with the rope attachment. | | | | | | | | Rookie

This weekend I got to play OH in a a/aa at wheaton and got rocked in the face when I went to block. I didn't know I could get my face over the net but I did... the price I payed is a bruised retina... doc said it will heal by itself and I play while it does so that is great!
It was different getting hit in the face at the net... usually since I play libero it happens every once and awhile playing D.

Oh and to hit hard and bounce the ball high... contact the top of the ball and hit it straight down... this means you have to jump high... fast arm swing, big follow through, 12 pack abs. | | | | | | | | Moderator

You're hitting a 260-280g (< 10 oz) ball so it doesn't take much to accelerate it. But the ball can't move any faster than your hand does so it really has to do with form and speed. Engaging your abs at the right time and snapping your wrist all give the ball that extra pop that is going to change it from an OK hit to a really "hard" hit.
Remember the clinic you went to EG? I don't think anyone would say Tom looked like he had raw strength, but that skinny guy could put a hurting on the ball.
So in short, Dex, you really need to work on your approach, form, and timing. Weights are going to help you but that is secondary to proper technique.
There are 10 kinds of people in this world. Those who understand binary and those who don't.

BD, good point. I sullied my point by saying it was just as much about control as it is raw stregnth, when I should have said MORE about control, and less about raw stregnth. Being in shape is a great asset, but you are right, it does take a back seat to proper form approach and timing.
I seem to remember a similar topic to this a few months ago when one poster (who i don't remember) was looking for a good workout regimen so he could " beef up" so he could hit a ball harder. Which is the wrong way to go about it. | | | | | | | | Player

Use the FORCE!
LOL's
Force = mass X accelleration
Power = strength X speed
Force = Power
sort of...
then there's centrifugal force, centripetal force, force of gravity, absorption rate, air resistance, kinietic energy, potential energy, velocity,
