Referee Stories: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly! We have all had our share of refereed games, refereed but people we like, dislike or just do not know. In many cases a mistake by referee is just a matter of missing a fraction of a second that he/she blinked. However, sometimes it's a form of A.D.D. or other distracting personal issue. Many of us have had dinner with our referee's or even know them personally, but sometimes removing all personal feelings aside, a play is a play and the rules are written so why on earth was that call so bad? Now we want to be clear, a referee can be someone who is certified and just doesn't fill in during a tournament or club game. We all want to know your Referee Stories: The Good the Bad and the Ugly! My favorite was in a finals match. I dove for a ball with one hand - in a fist.
Was called for a double... Still doesn't make sense to me. | | | | | | | | Rookie

In high school I got red carded for telling my player where he should be. After he asked, "Hey where should I be on weakside attack?"
My response, "You go down the line"
What the ref thought I said? I have no idea, he just kept saying, "you know what you said"
Then, being a soccer player, I was pissed and walked off the court cause I figured I had been ejected, but the ref said, no its only a point for the other team.

My only real problem with ref's lies in consistency. In our house league one ref calls things very tight (and I've since educated her on a few things from the rule book [I'll let one of my other teamates tell the story]) and the other calls nothing, not even close in/out calls.
In a few tournies we'll get the same thing, one ref wants to call everything tight, the other is just happy to be there. It's tough. | | | | | | | | Rookie

A team that we were playing hadn't been setting the middle at all so our middles weren't going up with them and they kept blocking the outsides. The other team finally set the middle a one ball, our middle didn't block it and the ball was going to hit inside the ten until I dove and dug it. I got the ball up and right to the setter. (Not sure how I did it, but it was nice) The up ref called the ball down, the down ref called the ball up, I yelled at the up ref as loud as I could, my mother in the stands (who is usually kinda quite) was yelling at the up ref and m coach almost had a heart attack. The result was replay.
Another time at nationals the ball was hit off of our middles hands and was flying back into the net that seperated two courts. I ran back from the OH's defensive position and played the ball before it hit the net. A piece of the sport court came apart at the very edge and I slid into the net, cought my hand inside the mesh and was tangled. We put the ball over but the ref blew the whistle and called me out of bounds. If I slipped on the sport court AFTER I played the ball wouldn't that mean I was inbounds when I played the ball. Then after she made that call she blew the whistle for the other team to serve while I was not on the court and fixing the sport court. Luckily the other team didn't serve the ball and let me get back on the court first. | | | | | | | | Rookie

While that second story really sucks, pursuit rules at tournaments that include other courts do not allow you to touch certain areas before during or after playing the ball. They should have explained this to the captain during the coin toss. As far as blowing the whistle for serve.....well thats just dumb now isn't it?

I have a separator thinger that divides my gym into two which is right over my volleyball net when it's up. One time during a game, BOTH refs didn't see it hit the divider when the other team bumped it over and it fell down on our side because we immediately stopped playing since we knew that it was our point. The (old) down ref didn't see it at all, and the other team got the point.

Last night. OMG They needed glasses badly. They called stuff so badly and didn't keep track of anything. Than our coach calls attention to it (might I mention she's a noted coach in my area to not mess with) and then this parent from the other team says she needed to be put in her place and needed a yellow card! Was she stupid???? Our coach knows more about volleyball than anyone probably. | | | | | | | | Rookie

The two refs that reffed my Westford game were HORRIBLE. They didn't communicate at all, the blind lady was my up ref, kept calling us for carries when they clearly weren't, etc.
My FAVORITE referee is my teammate/friend from my JOs team and Bay States team's DAD. He's wicked cool, and the fact that his name is John Smith makes him AWESOME. Plus, whenever he refs my games, we always win. I'm pretty sure it isn't favoring though. He's just an awesome ref. And I'm glad he isn't blind! | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
