Rule changes? - 02-13-2006, 08:31 AM

In a recent edition of Volleyball Magazine, Pat Powers (fmr. US Olympic Gold Medalist & Coach of the Gold Medal Squared VB Clinics) suggested that the Men's game is becoming fan 'unfriendly'. His rational was that a team will score 70% when receiving the serve, and that there are not enough sustained rallies.

His proposal is to make the court smaller, more specifically narrower as to allow effective jump serving.

Discuss!

I figured this thread would have been a hotbed of debate!

I think it would dramatically chafe the game! Definitely adding a little more court defense to the game. While the power of the mens' game is exciting it's cool to see great defensive plays. Spectators love defense, lol people are vindictive, they love to see defeat snatched from the jaws of victory.

Another proposal was to allow blocking/attacking the serve!?! How about that one?

There is a new rule already in effect where the serve can be returned to the opponent and the rule is that a serve can be returned from the back row behind the ten foot line if the ball is above the plane of the net and the hit has to occur behind the line. A ref had verified this new rule and I think I even saw it in the updated rule book

Found the reference FIVB 2005 Volleyball Rules Casebook
Pg.24 Attack Hit

Ref 4.36
In a match between the women of the USA and China, The Chinese served the ball, The receiver, Tee Willaims, jumped from behind the attack line and contacted the served ball from completely above the height of the net. The contect took place behind the attack line and was returned to the serving teams side of the net. Was the first referee correct in allowing the play to continue?

Ruling
Legal action. Although it is illegal to block served balls, or to attack most served balls from a height greater than the top of the net, The attack by Willams was legal since the contact point was completelty behind the attack line.
Rule 13.3.4

Cool Move - 02-16-2006, 02:41 AM

Just got back from playing and driving over 120 mi. to get home.

The service return back row attack sounds like a cool move, will have to give it a try

Hey, does anybody know if Pat was tipping a couple when he wrote the article? How's that any different than the men's serve in tennis? (To clarify what I mean...men win a high percentage of points on their serve in tennis. Fans still attend. People still watch. Vs. in competitive men's volleyball, the receiving men's team dominates w/a sideout most of the time and usually wins the point. I think people still like to watch the pass/set/kill. People like to watch power.) Or maybe jetlag for all the travelling he does w/his clinics?

His 2's/3's beach clinic just outside Brooklyn on the 4th last summer was cool.

I don't think it was a rule change but more so a rule interpretation.

Rule 13.3.4
A player Completes an attack hit on the opponent's service when the ball is in the front zone and entirely higher than the top of the net.

so a back row hit is not an attack
I wonder if a down ball is legal

not a very good idea, it would become an insurance liability to players on the recieving side ( broken nose, black eyes, cotacts popping out or even messing up the eyes of players ) i dont think it will happend to the indoor game... it worked on the beach cause it's a (2) person game. the 6 person indoor game will not change it's court size at least not the (fivb)., if it happends it might happend on the USAV side ( USAV rules...)
