Rules - 07-20-2006, 09:32 AM

I would like to see this everywhere.

(Taken from another post on this website)

"In 2004, the National Collegiate Athletic Association added a new libero rule to college volleyball in the United States. Rule 11-2-5-a states that the libero is allowed to serve in one position during game play. Coaches still have to inform the scoring committee of the libero number, but can assign the designation of the serving substitution during any time of the game."

Ya, I play Libero...

I served in highschool and in JO's but in college I couldn't and at Baystates I couldn't. I am wondering why this is? I think the rules should be the same no matter where you are playing. The only time the rules should change is from indoor to outdoor.

What do you think?

I think we need standardized rules also, BUT...........

AVP rules are for AVP players.
Those of us who are not AVP players should have one set of rules for us. IE: no short court with antennas for 3's, and 4's beach and grass. Keep 3 hits after the block. No let serves.

Indoor is closer to same set of rules for everyone than outdoors, but same libero rules, same service rules should apply throughout.

I play both in and out. The one rule I hate most is the let serve. If you can't get the serve over the net without hitting it, you should never be allowed a point for it. Granted, indoors there are 6 players who should be able to cover. But in 2's, 3's and 4's outdoor, it is not a good rule.
Just my opinion.

Playing til I die,
Outta Town

Just a little Clarification on Massachusetts vball...

The rule you stated is NCAA - which is not nessicarily the same as USAV (i believe). High schools follow MIAA (Massachusetts Interscholastic/intramural? atheletic asssociation) and PAVO rules, which are semi-nerfed NCAA rules. Junior Olympics do the same. Remember the switch from side out scoring to rally? Also the switch from best 2 of 3 to best 3 of 5? It was delayed a yearish or so from NCAA to hs/jo.

The collegiate league we play in NECVL and Baystates run off of USAV/NIRSA rules, not NCAA.

There was a poll taken at nationals in salt lake city - to see whether teams want to be able to use the libero serving rule. Should get voted through, which means NECVL will follow it.

Also there are differences between PAVO and USAV certified refs... I don't remember exactly. I know in Massachusetts PAVO ref high school/jo matches and USAV do collegiate matches.. Shouldn't be relavent to this question though..

So in short - the different leagues are going by different rules set forth by different governing bodies.

NECVL follows Nationals (NIRSA) which follows USAV I believe

Highschool listens to MIAA which mimics the NCAA (i believe nh lets libero serve?)

Hope this helps, i *believe* all info is correct, I don't have a rule book and am about to run to long island, so I didn't do many fact checking, just trying to remember from offical's meetings and what not..

I like the block counts as a touch outside. If you can't block it, let the defender get it. Altough the rule is a bit confusing because as a blocker if you touch the ball on a block and it come right back down to you you can touch it again. (my understanding of the rule) Also i like let serves. While rally scoring discourages the power jump serve, the let serve helps to encourage it. I think two people should be able to cover a serve that hits the net.

I was only really trying to talk about outdoor twos and indoor sixes. That is what I play so I am not familiar with outher variations. I understand where you are somming from and you brought up a good point about AVP rules for AVP players. Outdoor there needs to be some leway with setting for players not at the AVP leval, but all other rules should still stay I think.

Didn't they prevent the liberos from serving in order to make the offensive players they swich with serve at least once? That was my take on it. So with the NCAA rule where liberos serve does then the outgoing attack player not?

I'm only familiar w/ USAV rules. -tx
