shin pain - 05-21-2006, 03:40 PM

I was wondering, does anyone have any shin pain when they play? For almost 6 months now, I've noticed that I've had shin pain in my left shin, on and off when playing, especially when landing after a spike. It hasn't really concerned me too much until I played in a 2's tournament on grass yesterday, and it hurt ALL DAY, and after a while my left knee started hurting as well. After I was done playing I could pinpoint the exact spot where it hurt, on the bone, and it seemed be a bit swollen too. I iced my shin last night for a bit....and it's still a bit achy today.

Anyone else have problems with their shins when they play? Is there a brace I can wear for it? or maybe I should go to the doctors and have it checked out?
I welcome any advice.

What coach said - RICE... It might be a shin splint? Or you may be landing on it the wrong way... Not sure without seeing your approach - do you land mainly on the side off your approach?

uh, could be shin splints, could be muscle tenderness. Go see a doctor.

Sound shin splintie to meee. Not fun. doctors are always good. But if you are like me you won't go. Defintiely Rice. Try not to play on hard surfaces for awhile, and watch out if you do things like run because that will definitely aggrevate it.

alright, so, i went back into my sports med book and this is sounding like it could possibly be a stress fracture.
Without proper care, the shin splints can turn into a stress fracture. so, go get it checked out ASAP. Pretty much they might put you in a boot, maybe crutches and tell you to lay off it.

fortunately i don't have shin splints/pains from playing vb. but i will say i had major shin splints when i played basketball 3 or 4 days a week from the pounding on the floor. my suggestions: maybe cut down to maybe 2 times a week, ice your chins.i know my shins were really sore/sensitive. i tell you what, you know what i told? flexibility could be an issue. i was told that if your not so flexible in the stretching, tight muscles could be pulling on your calves which make your shins sore from being so tight. my email: dex2330@aim.com later

If its shin splints you can actually tape them, but it looks pretty funny and from what I have heard it isn't very effective either.

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for your replies and suggestions.
I haven't played since I did the tournament on Sat. but I did pepper for about an hour and 20 minutes last night....and my shin was sore but it wasn't as tender and swollen as it was Sat. I bought a shin/calf brace, I'm going to see how that feels when I play tonight.
I am going to schedule a doctor's appointment and have an x-ray taken to make sure there isn't a stress fracture....but i'm almost afraid to find out if there is one or not....if I have one they may tell me to lay off the volleyball, which is unthinkable!!!!

Hey Cheetah,

All I can say is you better suck it up for our 2's tournament in July! ha ha

I went for the knee X-Ray yesterday/Mon. & now he (ortho dude) says I gotta get an MRI.

We should make for quite the pair in July

Hew boy! We better fine tune our passing skills so we can be more lazy

Anyway, between us I think we'll have a height advantage on our competition
