Tipping and Dumping Bad Form? - 01-11-2006, 01:49 PM

I was just wondering what everyones thoughts were on the subject of Tipping and Dumpin? I've noticed from playing rec -> club volleyball that there seems to be quite a lot of animosity towards tipping, occasionally from my own teammates as well when its done during practice, is it all that bad?

I personally find that theres nothing better than mixing up hard hits with sneaky lefty tips, and seeing the helpless faces of the double block as they are coming down... I my opinion it's just bad covering by the back row. W

Whats the general opinion on this?

Mr. Owl

No more cast, no more crutches, no more wheel chair, and yes more volleyball!

Mr. Owl, how many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop?

At least at the level that I play, I don't think that there is an issue with people doing dumps or tips. If both teams are up to full strength then only having hard hits or all tips gets pretty boring as the other teams can figure it out quickly. When the mix is right though it teaches you to be a better player and always get to the ball. If you are playing with less people on a full size court however it gets pretty frustrating for all players if you just keep tipping it into the whole on the court.

Doubles is one thing.... I'd say yes, bad form.

If a team is advanced enough to put up a double block against you... game on!!! They should have someone covering the block agains tips etc. There's 900 sq.feet of court and the idea is to put it where they aint If all you do is tip, well that'll get boring not to mention real easy to defend eventually. You've got to diversify!!! Yes I'm a financial advisor, and yes you too should diversify

Tipping and dumping - 01-12-2006, 01:14 AM

As a hitter, I will throw a roll shot when the blockers seem to have my number. That works great in breaking a string of blocked hits in indoor sixes. As the setter in sixes, I love to throw in the occassional dump over on two if my hitters seem to be not doing well. The other team gets pissed, but they are not covering well enough if they can't get to it.
In doubles, I try not to ever dump, unless the other team starts throwing cheesey shots. I prefer a hard cut shot or long roll to a deep corner if my hits don't go down.
In fours, we use outdoor rules, so no tipping is allowed. But a great cutshot, with or without heat, will bring the point, and earn some respect.
As an older player, whose power has faded, my craftiness has made up for the loss of jump and big arm. I swing both left and right handed which often fools the blockers, and a few shots still have the speed indoors.

Playing til I die,
Outta Town

I dont feel so bad now! I can always "smash unsuspecting defenders in the face! " Sweet quote NewEngland!

Dinking, Dumping and Tipping as much as hitting cross, line or defense all all tools to win a game. The object for defense is to except the unexpected. The heck with it if they can't handle it. Thank you VBLI PEEPS
