What Do You Do Right Before The Game?

All too often we have a pre-game ritual, it could be peppering in front the opposite gender or just watching another game.

Make sure that I loosen up by stretching and doing one or two laps around the gym

Pepper, stretch, use the bathroom, talk junk to my teamates. Before I step on the court I usually like to watch a higher level game if possible and have a little MP3 time to try to forget about all the BS I just went through that day at work.

Typically put my shoes on as I have a bad habit of running late. When I get there early though, pop a couple of ibuprofen, toss the ball around, pepper for a good while, and hopefully take some hitting practice.

I'm either there early for a nice long warm-up with some dynamic stretching and loosening of the joints or I'm jumping out of bed saying "DAMMIT, I'm going to be late" and rushing to get dressed and drive like I'm in NASCAR. Saturday was a late day...

It's funny you mention brushing your teeth. I used to brush before hockey games. People thought I was nuts but A: putting your mouth peice in a couple times a week is gross enough but doing it with a dirty mouth? Boo! B: Being a goaltender I sweat alot and as a result drink alot. Occasionally I'd do a rinse & spit, doing that through a goalmask is tough, brushing helped

I don't know how it helps volleyball... but, full on!

Focus...... - 11-16-2006, 10:02 AM

I try to gain focus!

I play ball three nights a week, on two of my teams I play with my girlfriend and best friend. In these games I try to remove myself from idle conversation and focus on the upcoming game. I turn on my iPod for three minutes lay flat on my back close my eyes and think about how I want to play that game. However, on my men's team I tend to be the last to walk on because I'm always relaxed and imagine the game to a level of actually playing it in my head.

There's a story I read where man was sentenced to five years in jail for fraud. This man loved golf, playing five times a week before his arrest. One day he was reading a Golf magazine and begun to imagine his last game. He started asking his family for pictures of entire golf courses. He would get the pictures he would only look at them for a second then close his eyes and image the entire game as if he was playing it.

The day after the man was released he didn't sleep, travel, shop or eat some redicoulus meal. He went to a golf course, stood on the first tee and closed his eyes. He was imagining his first swing, even better how his entire day was going to go. By the end of the day his score was five under par. When five years ago that same man could break fifteen over par.

I am not fooling myself to think I'm going to improve my game that much but seeing the game in my head only aids in believing in myself.

Focus!

-Karl
