What do you like best about your volleyball events? - 03-27-2006, 11:21 AM

I'm curious, what do you like best about your volleyball events? Do you like the competitiveness, prices, free stuff, raffles, food, players or just being outside?

P.S. There is no one right answer

No more cast, no more crutches, no more wheel chair, and yes more volleyball!

Mr. Owl, how many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop?

I love the free stuff, some of the shirt stink but everyone in a while I get a shirt that I wear years later. Price is always OK, but the competitiveness or lack there of is always a concern for me.

I just like to play! I love to play with/against people that are better than me so I can learn and expand my game. For example:

This last weekend KVB hauled 3+ hrs to CT to play in a charity event only to lose in the first round of playoffs (we played for about 3 hrs, yes the ratio was way off there). We had a blast though and it was a great learning experience and it was the first time many people on my team ran a 6-2. I pretended to set and I walked away feeling great even though we lost, and didn't get any free stuff.

Don't get me wrong, I love free stuff as much as the next guy, only I'm a little bigger than he is so the shirts usually don't fit

I ran this poll on my website and got these replies.

Question
Do you enter tournaments for.....

bragging rights
prizes
cash
just the competition
just for fun/socialization

62% said "fun/socialization"
18% said "competition"
18% said "cash"

Mmmm... Freebies

90% of my t-shirt collection is made up of old volleyball shirts. They are starting to look vintage now.

I just got for the volleyball though...

In my opinion money only brings out more professional people that make the games a bit more slanted.

What do you think...

I took the cash prizes out of my tournaments(still throw it in for a surprise now and then) because it was drawing too many attitudes. Players were calling me, wanting to know how much the prize money was up to, to decide if it was worth their time to enter.

Had so much trouble with "Open" players that I actually banned them from playing (cancelled their division out) for 2 years. Those that came back afterwards were the non A--holes, who actually appreciated the work it takes to run a tournament.

Now everyone plays for the fun of the game, and winners get gift cards so they can buy what they want, and I don't have to haul a trailer full of prizes into Mexico, or worry about carrying a huge amount of cash.

Playing til I die,
