What are the "Unwritten Rules Of Volleyball"? - 08-04-2006, 11:42 AM

Unwritten Rules Of Volleyball

A few days ago a new member asked a question about reverse Co-ed 2's and the Gentleman's Rule, so that got us thinking, what are the Unwritten Rules Of Volleyball.

Are there really rules that players follow that are not mandatory?

So the question is, are there rules you or a teammates follow that are not "Officially" documented?

Call the ball... Call EVERY ball - in, out, mine, short - just do it.

When in doubt, play it out.

Serve IN.
- Serve to the weakest link
- Don't be an ******* about it depending on situation

If someone isn't covering thier court, point it out - kindly.
- If they don't respond, steal the ball

Call for your set, let them know your ready
- For a setter, don't set someone if they arn't telling you thier ready

Call yourself - net violations, carrier, etc.
- Don't bitch about people not calling themselves, merly mention "call yourself buddy".

Let the ref make all final decisions - it sucks when the refs getting polled by 12+ people.

Play your game.

At the end of the game, it's over, leave what happened on the court - on the court.

Like the line from the pirate movie... There not really rules, just a guideline (or somehting like that). No you don't have to follow them, but it's nice if you do, and you'll find yourself enjoying the game more, and meeting more friends.

They arn't rules for a reason - you don't need to follow them. It's also not the law to be nice to people, but most people chose to be. What kind of person are you?

I don't know if this a rule or should be, but be courteous... Last month I did a doubles tournament and made it out of pool. In the semis I was playing against a team whose friends had not made it out of pool on their net. The friends decided to camp out at our net and set up between the guide lines. Now I realize that this was outside, and this was a public park, but when I asked them not to smoke they gave me crap. I felt I was within my right to ask them since I was going to be the one on the court exerting himself and having the smoke as a distraction and there were a few 100 other acres where they could smoke.

Your thoughts? Watching an outdoor doubles tournament, sitting a few feet off the court and smoking a few butts, cool or uncool?

There are 10 kinds of people in this world. Those who understand binary and those who don't.

Thats a rule of life dude. Be courteous is not written but always expected in my book.

If I got anywhere, playing or not - I'll try my best to avoid smokers. If I can't do it - I'll ask them nicely like you did to possibly move, or go down wind. I'm not *allergic* but most understand if you say you are, and respect your wishes.

It does get into my contacts and bugs the hell out of me, so i'm not tooottallly lying...

One big pet peeve I have is when my friends and I are playing in an open gym situation, we have games already underway and a latecomer just walks onto your team mid-game, screwing up your rotation and even team dynamics. Hey buddy, have some courtesy and wait 15 minutes till we finish our game, you can join us after its over; otherwise show up on time!!!

Unwanted Walk-ons - 10-03-2006, 12:39 PM

^^^^^

Especially when the score is 25-24 during a game to 21 and both sides are fired up. Seriously, stay on the sidelines and warm up a little more.

Rule #1 - 11-13-2006, 11:42 PM

Uhhhh...

Rule # 1 - Don't be an idiot

Rule # 2 and all others - When in doubt, refer to Rule # 1

This is my condensed version of the unwritten rules of volleyball

I dig it

Simple is usually best...

I just want to add a corollary to the above rules:
If you don't know if you're being an idiot or not...you probably are!
