I would like to be there to offer what help I can those that want to improve.

One benefit of playing in a completely open rec. environment is the ability to try new things everytime I'm there. I can focus on one technique for the whole night and not worry if the rest of my game suffers for it.

Exactly, earlier in the season I was ready to give up playing in Hamden but I realized that it is still a decent forum to add different aspects to my game. Since the play there is not very competitive I can practice different serves all night or work on other things too.

A couple of years ago I thought a successful night there was based on how many games I won there, but now Its like I see things differently and success there for me is any night I can accomplish what I set out to do. If my passing is off, I work on that, I can try new serves and I work on placing and angling my hits more. That is what I now define as a good night of Rec. volleyball.

I consider a good night of rec ball when Air Diney and I put a hurtin' on the old men playing 2 on 6.

Spitting.

I saw someone do that at the last tournament I went to and then wipe his shoes in it... We guys don't have the white knee highs that we can wipe our shoes on like you women.

Ya, paying rec isn't always bad! It is fun to mix it up, like playing 2 on 6, if the other people aren't offended, or like Golden said, practice your different serves, or something you wouldn't try somewhere else!

I hate to interrupt because your points are very valid and I see them all the time. But I have two habits I hate to see at rec or open-gym play:

1. Soccer kicking the ball.

It's a sign of laziness and against alot of rules, but in most rec leagues and open-gym play the rules are softened and some are even disregarded.

If you can get to the ball with your feet, then you could have gotten to the ball with your hands. The foot has so many angles on it that it effects the travel of the ball. I've seen people hacky-sack a ball with their instep when it's right in front of them. The ball is shanked and we lose a point. If they had passed it, I could totally see it being crushed by the hitter.

I know that some reading this may use their feet, I even used my feet a couple times to set but broke the habit over the last few years and now it's a pet-peeve of mine.

2. The wearing of kneepads making you lazy.

I haven't worn kneepads in several years and alot of people think they need them to be a "Volleyball player." This is incorrect and ever since I learned how to roll and brace my body on a collapse, I haven't needed to wear them.

The problem with knee pads is that they make people lazy and i think they would crawl around in them if they could.

You have more control passig a ball on your feet then you do passing on your knees.

I have no problem with people wearing kneepads, but don't let them make you lazy.

Overall, I guess you could say the worst habit on the court is laziness. Both my points are about it, I guess they are just two examples of how laziness comes into play.

When I first read this I thought you meant a method of returning a ball to the serving team after the play is dead. I've seen too many players get hit in the face by some mad player taking their frustration out by kicking a ball under the net. Throws over the net don't bother me too much but I have played in places where you get a warning if you don't roll the ball to the serving team.

I hate when there is only 10 min. left of open play and people slow roll the ball under the net. I'm trying to squeeze in as much play as possible here, bowl that thing at me.

Similar to that is when the ball is rolling towards another court at an easily interceptable pace and someone just lolligags after it letting it enter the other playing area and causing the other match to be halted. Have the courtesy to run after the ball so that you don't interupt another game. We're all here for the exercise as well as the competition; running after the ball on or off the court makes no difference.
