Bad Habits or Bad Manners? - 08-09-2007, 12:18 PM

I agree with this thread that there are some bad habits people make.

1. BALL HOGS...setting especially. Always setting the same people and seemingly to bypass you all the time.

2. Players being rude and making snide remarks behind another's back.

3. Picking their nose is good one Glenn almost as bad a beer belching GROSS!

4. Give pointers on plays, BE POLITE NOT RUDE. You can upset a person by forcing the issue.

5. Jealousy of partners, pushing people off courts and when a person has been injured consider giving them a second chance instead of "Oh they are a liability."We all hurt sometimes just in different ways.

6. Not showing up on time.

OK, I am gonna have to sound like a volleyball snob and respond to the last post......

I am a setter and I play competitively becuase I like to win. As a setter, you have to set your hitters that will put the ball away, while using other hitters as decoys, etc. If I have a girl or guy that gets a point EVERY time, she/he will get more of the sets than someone who lobs it over for an easy free ball (which they set up for their kill) or someone who hits it into the block everytime.

As a hitter, I know I don;t get as much of the sets as the girls or guys who are over 6 ft tall and slams the ball straight down. And I accept that becuase I want my team to win. I actually get mad at the setter for setting me when we are down points and the other hitters are putting balls away. Better yet, i tend to switch positions with the setter so I stay as libero in back row while the setter stays up front (seeing that I dont black on a mens net anyways!)

That's just my opinion, sorry for sounding like a snob! But I have to defend the setters!

Clarity on the Setters. - 08-09-2007, 01:43 PM

No no no....not all Amy not stating all setters. Your not a VB-Snob your actually a very nice person have played before with you. Any day I would buy you a beer.

Leagues are different compared to open play. Leagues you play with the same people all the time generally.

Open play at Woodbridge on Mondays is a good example. Girls get on a team of 6's and they set to their generally doubles partner all the time. You do not get a chance to hit and it is frustrating. I have seen guys go thru the same thing and he asked for his money back. Can not blame him.

I know that when I would set I try to give fair advantage to everyone. In a league it is different yes. You want the best players so you can score the most points.

Example of poor manners I blew out my ACL in a Soccer game. I was blocking the ball against the Wall, refused to give it to her and a girl took her toe to pull my Achilles heel out from underneath me my knee twisted. She took the ball and ran away. Needless to say $15k later and a 1 1/2 years out of VB was that right of her? She did not even come over to apoligize as I was injured with a swollen knee and they were carrying me off the court.

I make amends if I can but that is how I was raised. I care about a team and work with them.

Leagues are totally different. I hope this makes a little more clarity on this.

By the way come back to CT Amy have a Happy Hour for you!

There are always other ways to look at these things. I would expect doubles partners to set/pass to eachother. Perhaps indoor 6's is the only venue they have for practice and they are preparing for a tournament. It would be a disservice to eachother if they weren't getting in enough time learning where they like to hit and how they like to be set and even how they set.

While it may not be fair to all of the attendees of the volleyball facility, there is no rule that states that you have to share.

In my experience I have found open play to be much better when I've rolled in with at least half a team.

I can understand if the person waits until the last second to go for the ball, but just because someone kicks the ball doesn't mean it's laziness...

If you can get to the ball with your feet, then you could have gotten to the ball with your hands.
You're an idiot for saying that. Unless you walk like cro-magnon man, that's entirely not true. It all depends on your center of gravity and the situation.

1.) You're playing defense and expecting the ball to be hit high, so your weight distribution and center of gravity is backward. The ball ends up being hit short. If you're gonna tell me that you can easily shift your weight forward to get your hands under the ball to dig the ball up, you're frickin' amazing. If in that situation you can at least get the ball up for someone else to get under it, kick it by all means. A ball that doesn't hit the floor is still in play and a chance for a side out.

2.) You're chasing a ball off the court and it's barely within hands reach and almost about to hit the floor. More often than not, the person that dives for the ball will hit the ball farther out of bounds or bump the ball into their head. I'll run after it and slide on one knee and kick the ball back to within play. Your leg is longer than your arms and your foot is angled back behind you when you kick the ball. There's a better chance of the ball getting back to within play.

3.) Someone shanks a ball under the net and you're the setter. I'll chase the ball down and kick the ball back under the net just to keep the play alive. If you dive, chances are you'll get called for a line violation.

Fus has seen me do it our first time together. I think she was a little suprised when the ball came flying back over her head...

I agree with kicking the ball!! You should never, ever kick the ball. I broke three bones in my left wrist when someone tried to kick the ball I was pancaking... they kicked me instead! Your legs have much more power than your arms which makes them (and the balls that are sent flying) more dangerous. If you want to kick, go play soccer!

Another bad habit I see often? The people that show up just late enough so that the net has already been set up and then hightail it outta there so that they don't have to help take it down.

Treating players fairly around you is important too. Then you build up a better reputation around you for being a team player. Doubles partners can set/pass that is fine, but after a while I have heard people comment.

I hope to improve my game too. I try to be fair but I do not care for being pushed around.

I enjoy your response. It shows you rather have someone believe in themselves rather than give up. I would play with you anyday.
