Would you rather play volleyball or watch it on TV/or live. - 03-10-2006, 08:01 PM

Personally, I would much rather play than to watch. That includes AVP, on TV or live.
I do believe that most volleyball addicts follow the same line.

When the AVP finally came to the Phoenix area(Tempe AZ), they scheduled it on the same weekend I was running my big tourney on the beach in Mexico. We still had just under 70 teams show up to play in our tournament.

If, however, I am traveling and staying overnight somewhere, I flip channels and come across volleyball, even local college games, I'll watch for a short while.

It is not a TV sport, or a true spectator sport. If you play at all, watching only makes you drool and want to play.

It would kill me to set up a tournament and not be playing in it.

Last night, our indoor coed 6's match was at 6PM. My wife was to play in women's 6's the next time slot. I stayed to see if a team in the coeds needed a guy, but no one did. I supported my wife by watching her play. The next time slot she was to play women's again. I asked again if any of the coed teams needed anyone, but since they did not, I left. I could not sit through watching anymore. Not even my wife's team. If there is a net, a ball, and players present, I WANT TO PLAY!

Makes me want to grow bumps on my chest at will, so I could play on the women's league since they seem to always be short of players!

Playing til I die,
Outta Town

You are a riot. Bumps. I definitely agree that playing is much better than watching. But I also think that I learn quite a bit from watching people play too. So, Would I rather be playing, yes, but if I can't I'd rather be watching volley than say.... cleaning my house.

As much as I enjoy volleyball, watching indoor vb on tv can put me to sleep. Sometimes the AVP matches can, too. Then again, so does NFL football and I still watch it whenever its on.

I think it depends on which volley we're talking about. Honestly, I can't stand watching or playing beach ball. The only reason I play it is to improve my passing and ball control, but overall it is horrid for my indoor game. If I wanted to see women in bikinis, I'd just walk down to the beach and stare.
As for the original statement, I'm an addict of the sport. I go directly from my practice or matches to UCSD or UCLA matches. Sometimes I feel like a crack baby in a way...but a cute one..

Seeing as I'm newer to the sport I try to get as much vb as I can (I've got a real busy schedule). I try to play at least twice a week, and read anything I can get my hands on. There's not alot to watch around here, but I try to show up @ my leagues early & stay late to watch the power teams. There are a few players in the league who've just got awesome technique and I try to pick up tidbits.

I've been to a couple men's collegiate club tourneys to watch and that was ok, also a couple NCAA women's matches. I enjoy watching live way better than on tv. It's tough to watch on tv because they either play it on channels that you need to pay hundres of dollars to have on your package, or they play it at times where you should be playing. I think broadcasters should recognize that it's players who want to watch
