Ideally it'd be a 5-1 just so all the hitters know the setter and visa versa. I've yet to play on a team that was good enough defensively to play that format. So we're usually a 4-2.... we'll prob. move to an international 4-2 this season, hopefully. If I can convince a couple people to hit middle. It all comes down to staffing in adult leagues.

5-1

More consistent sets, setter can also attack.

What offense you are running really depends on the league you are playing in and the players you have on your team.

I don't know if a 5-1 is really asking your setter to not hit... You have more offense when your setting from the front row, than from the back.

You can jumpset and block those tight balls. Dumping is FAR more valuable than a hit from a setter.

If your only setting back row - the defense will never jump with you. If your front they have to respect you.

Besides... A hit on two instead of a dump is always nice

It also depends on weather your setter is a setter or not Also if you have middles that are middles, so on and so forth.

It's all about your setters and the level you are playing at. While playing higher level games either 5-1 or 6-2 is a must. Doing anything else will only force your team to play a defensive game, not offensive as it is intended.

Mr. Owl, how many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop?

hrmmm, i think it depends on your team...

i used to love 6-2 just because it gave me a chance to hit. ( was never really allowed to) caz they would just want me to practice setting yup the other girls...

but, a 5-1 i have to say is amazing! works very well defensively as long as the setter is good at front row play.

ok what is this keep it simple... how do you keep it simple when you don't use a 6-2 or 5-1???

4-2, middle setter, maybe swap out a better hitter with a better setter in the front row....
