We could have run a 5-1 last night! Then you all wouldn't have had to deal with my crappy sets. LOL

If I remembered to show up, I would have gladly set a 5-1.

Just explaining what Keep It Simple was. I'm willing to learn but someone has to tell me what I'm doing. Most of my games have been limited to 4-2 and doubles. Doesn't mean I can't learn. And nothing I wrote here means I'm not crazy.

Mako I agree, I personally like playing a 6-2, but recently I've had setting from the 5-1 we were running. The 6-2 provides more offensive domination but at the same time opens a door for center and back row corner defensive holes. A 5-1 will do a lot of the same but force your hitters to work a lot harder (on defense) in the rotation where the setter pushes to the front. This is the only problem I see with a 5-1, strong blocking and hitting will be required to take advantage of the 5-1. However, 6-2 or 5-1 only works if all players know their offensive and defensive positions.

Yeah.......

I was agreeing with you.....

On a good team, 5-1. On a not so good team, 6-2. I prefer 5-1 though. A consistent and familiar setter is imperative against strong competition.

In my league this year there was a setter that was capable of hitting the ball ten foot line very aggressively. He was huge, porbably 6'3''-6'5'' with close to a 40" vertical. HIs talents at hitting were not felt on the court though sense he was setting a 5-1. He was still a big threat in front row with hismassive block and...effective dumps. But to sacrifice his hitting hurt his team to the point of losing sectionals.

5-1 - 01-26-2007, 02:36 PM

I think 5-1 is keeping it simple, plus enables your setter to hit/dink half of the time. If I was to coach any team, I wouldn't bother teaching anything but 5-1. You get your best setter that way all of the time. If that is all you teach than it becomes simple, because that is the only option and is less confusting than "who is setting now".
Our team was lucky, we had a lefty setter who could power dink and power spike as well. When he was vacant, I set and I am lefthanded and it is a lot of fun to get some pass tight to the net and your thinking "great, that's impossible to set" so you just crank on it. Sometimes I would hope to get tight passes. Since I don't set much, once in a while I would hit one and be coming from the back row. Oops! Still fun doing 5-1 with lefties.

Down with the 6-2!! - 03-05-2007, 10:46 PM

I just finished a tourney with a 6-2 and let me say, I am not in favor of it at all!

In yankee, you have a specific rating and a specific number of points to play with when forming a team. If you are a good setter, and a good hitter, you have a good rating. If you are only good at one, you're rating is probably lower. That said, I'd rather blow my points on ONE GOOD SETTER and then use other points on a good hitter instead of getting two alright guys.

Another thing was, I had to keep remembering who my setter was in specific rotations. Was setter A going to be flashing me signs? Wait, we rotated, sheet, setter B is giving me signs. Did I miss it? Wait, was it setter A who liked to run 1s? Crap!

I'm sure if I played with this team all the time, it would have been better but it still doesn't negate the fact that we could have had more firepower in the lineup if we had gotten a stronger hitter instead of a second setter.

I love running a 5-1. I prefer to set... even though I'm usually one of the best hitters on the team, too. The fact that I'm ambidextrous helps a lot. The other teams sees me serving right handed, then crush the 10' line with a lefty on a tight pass...
