well, if it's anything like serving with a torn rotator cuff, jump serving hurts like hell. but then again, just playing with that injury hurts like hell.

But I agree with the others, unless you have a super hard jump serve, a nasty floater is nearly always harder to return.

Unless you have bad passing all around (cough-like the diggity doggs-cough), then it doesn't really matter what kind of serve you use.

I'd imagine that a jump serve would use similar mechanics to a regular or back row attack. If you're doing those without pain, then you should be ok.

Now the real question is, how the hell did you tear your labrum, how bad is it, are you getting surgery to repair it or do they expect it to heal?

There are 10 kinds of people in this world. Those who understand binary and those who don't.

eh, i did it back in high school. i was supposed to have surgery, but opted to suffer forever and ever instead (makes life more dramatic). actually i just didn't want the 6 month recovery period. i need my right arm, ya know?

i think the mechanics are way different with a hit on the net vs a back row attack vs a jump serve. not sure why though. is there a doctor in the house?

Yes, I can jump serve. I have found that my jump float is much more effective, however. I wasn't getting the pace necessary on my topspin jump serve to make it effective; my aces were up but so were my errors also. I take a minor hit to aces when I do my jump float, but I like the placement and disruption a strong float can do to a weak passer. There only needs to be one bad passer on the court.

Well I haven't since I played for Navy...but I think I might be able to dig up a few pics. As for when to use it.....If you have the confidence to do it and you do it well then as a coach I encourage it....if I have a player who does it and isnt good at it.....that player will be getting splinters for a game or so. I prefer to float serve because I can make the ball dance and have gotten more aces with it then jump serving which I think is a easier pass to make then following a crazy floater that dips and swirls at the last moment.
