Do you set up plays prior to the game for your free ball offense?

No, but that's not a bad idea.

I always call free ball plays before each service. Being a setter, a lot depends on who's in the front row on both sides of the net. I find that because I'm fairly consistent at where I place my sets, blockers set themselves up and plant themselves. I prefer to move my middles around a bit so the middle blocker must move as well.

Set10, what plays do you run?

Obviously depends on the team I'm on, but currently my club team I have a good lefty rightside (I'm setting a 6-2 with him so he's always in front row) and a pretty good middle as well. What I did, and it was highly effective, was run the middle on a 32 and my rightside came on a back 1. It was pretty easy for me to read the middle blocker and make my choice before the ball even got there. Either he is sitting on me looking for a 1 or even looking for the back 1 (usually if its worked a few times) and I set the 32 which allows my middle to crank the ball through the seam, or the middle blocker is following my middle in which case my rightside will have a 1 on 1 with a usually poorly formed block, many times no block at all because OHs like to block on the pin because it makes their transition easier.

Interesting. What have you got your OH/Left Side Hitter doing? I'd imagine you've got a lot of flexibility in case the defense tries to adapt by bringing the opp in a little to give some extra coverage on the MH.

The OH is hitting a 4. Our OHs were the least skilled on our team, so plays involving them were few and far between. Obviously the plays were not foolproof considering we only really had two options but it worked most everytime I got a good pass.
