I had to go with power. Placed shots can get picked up easier than power shots... but power shots can be easier to block and the list goes on and on. It all comes down to what I would rather see, and for that I must pick power. (The best would be an inside the 10 cut shot with power. Probably my favorite hit...)

It's like any other sport... Baseball fans love the home run, golf fans love the long drive, basketball fan loves the dunk. But when it comes down to it, a point is a point and placement shots are just as effective if not more so.
When it comes to doubles, I've seen players not get served because they can kill the ball. I haven't seen players not served because they can hit roll shots at will. | | | | | | | | Player

I haven't seen players not served because they can hit roll shots at will. | hmmm, power versus control/finesse game. it's a good question. my answer, i like power and i like dink game/control/finess game as well. in other words, there is a time for power and sometimes it's good to change up your opponent with the dink game. dex
ps, i am not sure how to start a new thread? but my question of the day:who's a better overall player? kerri or misty???? setting? spiking? defense/passing? mobility?
better percentage of putting the ball away(power and dinks) blocking?(being taller means you're a better blocker or does it?) serving(i wish kerri would jump serve more than she does.i couldn't believe i saw misty pull out the jump serve for the first time last sunday. maybe misty could do more of that. i am pretty sure kerri being taller has a higher vertical than misty!!!! my answer, not sure if right or wrong is misty? my reasoning: from the vb i see on tv,kerri gets a lot more serves than misty because misty has a better put away percentage than kerri.
i haven't seen any replies as to who's a overall better vb player, kerry or misty??

At the same time, however, a power shot definitely sends a message to the other team, so I would give that a very slight edge... | | | | | | | | Super Moderator

I went with placement. Every once in a while I play with some guys in HS and boy, can they swing.... they just have no idea where it's going to go. Hardly effective. Power is nothing without control, and with great power comes great responsibility..... or so I've heard. | | | | | | | | Moderator

Not a fair comparison NERT. You're comparing the low of power hits to placement shots.
I've played plenty of teams who did not have a legitimate hitter and while they could bump the ball over to anywhere they wanted, it was just a free ball that we could then POWER back!! Placement without something on it is nothing but another attempt at a kill. | | | | | | | | Moderator

This is such a big question actually. Are we talking watching or playing? Or are we talking indoor or sand? I mean if we are talking about watching, I like to see someone hit the &$*# out of the ball. But I pretty much get the same satisfaction out of hitting a ball down indoors as I do watching someone trying to dive in the sand for one of my well placed shots. When it comes to doubles, I've seen players not get served because they can kill the ball. I haven't seen players not served because they can hit roll shots at will. | I've found the complete opposite outdoors. With everything else being pretty equal, given the hard hitter and the guy with the great shots, I'll serve the bomber 99% of the serves. Blocking power isn't really that big a deal. Covering shots is alot more frustrating & difficult. (Though, if you're playing on the shorter courts it's a little less difficult.)
Of course, everything else is seldom equal. The guy with the GREAT shots is likely on the shorter side and HAD to develop them. So, if he's playing with a 6' 6" partner who's got power, you're probably gonna go to the shot maker more often simply because height is harder to defeat than anything.

hmmm....
here's my 2 cents....for me, I really really wanna hit the ball hard, but I know that sometimes I should take it down a notch and find the right placement. The reason being, is that my hitting is not quite perfected, so in order to get points, relaxing and finding that placement spot could be key to get the point. I LOVE hitting, and I want to get better at it, but I know that when I get too excited about a ball, I don't get my timing down right, and will smack the ball out, in the net, etc.
But, like Mycena had said, there is a whole bunch of different views on this topic. I like watching professionals hit the ball hard! | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
