As for underhand serve, I can put it wherever I want on the court. I always get it in, except for that once in a blue moon serve. Because I play on a A/B league, I get a lot of points every time I serve. I like the "right over the net" serve, cause a lot of people are not expecting it, and it just drops in the middle of the court. I agree wth KVB that if the level of play was a bit higher, I may not be able to get as many points as I do on my serve.
I bought you a $400 net system.... set it up and practice! Need more balls... see Glen, I'm sure he'll cut you a deal on some nice tach. outdoor balls.

Has anyone ever set a net up against a hill as sort of an automatic ball return?

Who needs a net? Get a wall and start practicing. You don't have to even hit hard, most of it is tossing the ball to the right height and learning how to make good, consistant contact with the ball with the correct part of your hand. Once you get comfortable with that getting the ball over the net will be cake.

I was reminded while playing in a 2's tournament last week of another situation where underhand is better....playing through the heavy pouring rain and winds (like idiots), you throw the ball up, you can't even see it with the water gushing into your eyes, and the ball feels like it weighs 20 pounds or more....

SERVE UNDERHAND!!!

I dig it

We all do what we have to, however, if you can clearly serve overhand and you think it's funny to mess around you better get it over the net.

I just played in my first 2's tournament this past monday where I served almost every ball overhand with great success....only had a few in the net!
I mixed in one of my underhands every once in a while to throw the other team off, and then switched to underhand a bit more in the playoffs because my shoulder was tired and I was afraid of making more serving errors.

It was great!

I do not use underhand serves regularly. I almost always serve overhand. The only time I resort to underhand is if i have been playing for an extended time and my shoulder is fatigued. That said, some people I play with have developed their underhanded serve so that it has the "knuckleball" effect. It can be pretty effective at times, so I do not discount it.

Indoors I don't think an underhand serve should be used, ever... there are far too many other methods of serving that do more than simply give the other team a better than average chance of getting a great pass off, and hitting on your team.

Outdoors is another story, while I am still working on perfecting mine, I have seen a (what was referred to as a reverse sukihara) underhand serve which his a high rate of forward spin and a very high trajectory. The serve is easy to lose in the wind, and in the sun... not to mention if you do not pass well it is easily shanked due to the high velocity and vertical drop.

I think that after a period of time of playing, any player should naturally want to play at a higher level and move away from the standard underhand serve and evolve into an overhand, fire throwing, machine.
