Depends on the level of the team. Sometimes it's more important to control the first touch because it's the only one you're going to get

At higher levels 70% of points are scored on serve receive. The passing is so good that it's the one chance the team gets to run it's quickest offense.

Receive, always.

You have first attack.

Since I've started coaching, I've always felt that choosing serve was better because it challenges your defense to set the tone early. Obviously it hasn't always worked to our benefit, but I like being able to see what the opponent has so we can adjust on the fly should we need to...

It depends what you are playing... sideout, I would take serve, especially if you have a great serve. Sideout, the serving, especially the first one, is usually easier which should generate and easy put-a-way for you. Indoor, if thier best jump server is going to serve first, let them have it. He/she will have to serve the first ball of the game, cold.

So I think it all depends.

Recieve Always Recieve..... - 08-03-2006, 09:29 AM

This is only my opinion so here it goes,

I know the newbies think serve serve serve, however, in rally scoring the other side's server has a better chance of messing up, so just give them a chance.

Think of it this way, you serve and shank or out the ball you lose a point and have to deal with the pain of the bad serve, the other team does it, you have a point and you are off to a excellent start.

I think you should always choose receive in rally scoring.

When playing side out, you always serve first, how are you going to score

alot depends on your own teams weakness, if your weakness is reciveing then you want to go with the serve., with your best server and use your block as the first line of defence... if your team is a good passing team then you want to go with receive and use your teams attacking be the first offence.....

High level ball with sideout scoring, always recieve first.

Lower level ball or traditional scoring, serve first.
